Went through late 40s Oscar winning movies and now I can say: no, I've never even heard of it.

In that case I'm really sorry - actually I specifically chose it because I thought it would be a well-known film and easy to guess.

I suppose I should have gone for "a young man has a piece of jewellery forced upon him and goes to astonishing lengths in order to get rid of it" instead.

Our next movie features a mildly crazy person, who believes one of the 3 main chracters to be his daughter.

It's well known by people who enjoy cinema but even they haven't really seen it or know much of the details really, I've heard the name and seen clips.

So what you're saying is that the person the man mistakes for his daughter is actually a man?

including his friend, who is (metaphoricaly in this case) not who he appears, because he's no friend at all.
