Well, no. There's no realistic chance of finding the film through such a vague description if you haven't actually seen it, and it doesn't look as though anyone has seen it.;)

Okay, trying not to give it away too quick or make it google-fodder. There's also a scene invloving an acid trip and a swimming pool, one in a plane which is going down, a Bowie lookalike, Kyle Glass in the Director's Cut, a character named after a Beatles song and a whopping music budget of about $3.5million.

Then it must be Almost Famous (at any rate that one has an uncredited Kyle Glass and a character called Penny Lane) - but I had to use IMDB, I'm afraid...
Never heard of that one, though; is it any good?

I like it rather a lot. It's enough to make Kate Hudson really attractive, when usually she comes across quite bimboish, which is a good start  The soundtrack is excellent, there are some very good performances and a lot of neat jokes, and the ending stays away from being too obvious. Definitely worth a watch.

A man goes to visit a friend, discovers he's dead, then discovers he's not dead after all, and then kills him.

Hint #1: The aforementioned friend had/has a pet, and this turns out to be crucial for the discovery of his not-dead-after-all-ness.
Hint #2: At one point, the main protagonist visits a hospital and is shocked by what he sees (but the film only shows his reaction, so you never quite know what he saw there).
Hint #3: One of the - many - things this film is famous for is its music, which features an instrument which is extremely rarely used to play anything other than a particular type of folk music.

Not that I'm aware of... But it's a _very_ famous film. I'm sure you've all heard of it and I'm just really rubbish at describing it.

Hint #4: The film is set in a European capital and is what you might call a film noir.
Hint #5: One of the characters trades with counterfeit antibiotics and is named after a fruit.
Hint #6: It's a black-and-white late 1940s film, and it won an Oscar.
Hint #7: The script was written by a very famous (20th-century) English writer.
Hint #8: The most famous actor among the cast, the one who played the character described in #5, was himself a scriptwriter - among a whole bunch of other things (as a result of another one of his projects, he also caused a mass panic, actually) - and won an Oscar for another screenplay he wrote. The film he wrote that screenplay for is equally famous to this one.
