I'm guessing by the traffic in this thread that your clues there are still a bit tough

Ok, it's a short film produced in a series of films that were shown on a television channels.
The series of films are interconnected in no way, it's simply like the Twilight Zone except these are bona fide movies (at one hour long) and each movie (episode) is done by a very famous director in the genre that the series focuses on, which is Horror.
The director who did this film is famous for several remakes in the 70s and 80s, notably one that reside in Flop's signature.
If that's not enough of my vague clues then you're all hopeless.

Hmm, fair enough, but could we please go back to proper films now?

anyway, we're already guessing, so I think we should finish this turn.
back to hinting:
Pigggggg was right about the series, it is indeed the Twilight Zone (Serling's one, not the new one).
also as far as I know it's pretty well known. I have to say that I saw spoofs of it before I ever saw the episode itself.
it was spoofed in such animated shows as "The Simpsons", "Jonny Bravo", "Eek! the Cat" (sadly the Imdb page only lists Simpsons as having done so).
also, the main character is played by an actor who later became the star of a different pouplar Sci-fi show.

You want the specific episode? Fair enough, it's Nightmare at 20,000 Feet
It apparently features in the Twilight Zone movie, with John Lithgow (who also fits your description).

correct.
TZ episodes are like little black and white movies on their own.
also, the originl role of Bob Wilson was played by none other than William Shatner, who went on to play James Kirk in a little known production called "Star Trek".
