I don't think it's a stunt, I think it's genuine. It's been hinted at before, she's always shied away from publicity and it's not going to sell any extra copies - all it could do is annoy the fundamentalists who already hate the work anyway.
Well... but then why announce it in that fashion? I just find it a bit hard to believe it was a spontaneous answer to a spontaneous question, especially since she's always been remarkably good at getting Harry Potter back into the headlines whenever public attention was starting to flag - despite not being particularly keen on personal publicity. While it isn't going to sell any extra copies in the shape of making lots of gay people rush to buy the books, it'll keep people talking about them (the books, not the gay people), so indirectly it will sell extra copies.

I've heard it was first revealed during the production of a new movie, where the script hinted to Dumbledore's old girlfriend.

Who cares if it is or not, it's probably going to be fact in the "Harry Potter" mythos for anyone who actually bothers to care.

As if we're expected to believe that JK had that an in-depth history for any of her characters.
Tolkein she ain't.
Dumbledore's history... let's see.
He had a fling in Paris on a holiday with a beatiful young american man who showed him how loving and gentle the gay times can be.
He was born in herefordshire.

On a related note, I saw something in the paper today about a report encouraging young gay men and women to be ambitious in their careers and not to worry about their sexuality holding them back. Fair enough. It included a quote from Sir Ian McKellen along the lines of "I don't think my sexuality's been a hindrance in my working life." Anyone want to point out to him that his choice of profession isn't exactly one in which young gay men were likely to be worrying about discrimination... ?

Beef: He has a point: There are a lot of hairdressers, volleyball players, ballet dancers and florists who don't have to worry about that.
I met a goldfish who remembered meeting me before, but I had forgotten about that.

Not to mention all the wizard headmasters.

That's not entirely accurate. Being openly gay may not hinder an actor's career today, but that certainly wasn't always the case. A number of highly successful gay actors (like John Gielgud) spent a major part of their careers keeping the fact that they were gay hushed up as much as they could. Within his generation [generation of actors, that is], McKellen was pretty much an exception, actually.
But yes, it does seem a bit of a silly thing to say today.

It doesn't seem particularly likely that he spent ages thinking about what to say, it was probably a 30-second call for a quote, it just amused me. They missed the obvious trick of asking Graham Norton if he thought it'd hindered him, too - sloppy, really.
