There's enough of us in here already, thanks!

I find a similar thing with ZAngband - past a certain point my characters tend to last a lot longer, down to about dlvl 25 or 30, before they get killed by some demon or other (usually Archviles). I've yet to reach that point with ADoM. I just had a character who opened her very first door to encounter a tension room full of goblins. Luckily she was another troll so survived quite easily, but just got killed trying to pick the lock on a door while sickened by eating kobold meat. Bah. Is it a good idea to search before trying to pick locks - does that increase odds of finding a trap?

Thank goodness, I wouldn't want to be embarrased with your poor selection of literary works that find themselves into your time.

Kidding, kidding!

My main problem is getting lost, don't ask how, but I always seem to wander into places that get me hopelessly killed.

Definitely. If you try to pick a trapped door you'll always set off the trap, though, whether you've detected it or not. One safe way of opening those doors is to

use a wand of knocking. They're dead common and practically useless in later game, so you might as well use them straight away (a wand of knocking makes a "knocking sound" when you zap it.

@Piggy: Where do you tend to get lost? Any particular dungeon?

Lots of places in the game can get you killed if you wander into them while to are too inexperienced (or two inexperienced, in the small cave).  The Infinite dungeon, for example, can get quite hard quite fast for a low level character.

Sorry about double post but I just found something I'd never fonud beofre.

A tension room and a room full of traps being generated in the same room, I alos discovered it while invisible so I stood outside blasting inwards while all the monsters inside were running around setting off all the traps.  Due to monsters constantly falling down pit traps the room is overflowing with pit vipers, I'll tell you how it goes after I've finished with it.

EDIT: Damnit, my invisibility wore off and I was trapped in a corridor between several pit vipers and a giant centipede.  I killed the vipers and then the centipede, but not before becoming heavily poisoned.  Also had the misfortune to run out of power points at this moment in time (I'm a gnomish wizard, btw) so I was chased down the corridor by a pit viper and several other monsters.  I got 10 PP (the amount I need to cast lightning bolt) at the same time as the viper caught me up and delivered the fatal dose of poison.  Still pretty cool though.

Me, on eariler in the thread, said:

Good luck Juni.  And when you get to the area, fight only 19 fights (don't becoem champino yet) the rewards you will get will be much higher if you leave it until you get a quest later on the the same dungeon (the village elder in dwarftown, also in the CoC.  He gives you lots of quests).

Don't worry about it, it's not too important that you missed out on the goodies.  The extra stuff you get is just nice to have.

It shouldn't be in the world of ADoM anymore. I encountered your sorceress yesterday and slayed her

Dunno anymore. I do know I got slayed by an overdose of gian/large spiders and tarantulas, so those S-s seem very, very familiar.

Well well, there's no more save game for me, it seems... damn you Tiki! :D No, seriously, I've been trying to play with male characters and none of them survives far beyond Yrrigs. Now I don't know do I even care anymore, but it would've been nice to have one even partially succesful male character before I die IRL. I must admit, that this is actually disturbing me. Not because I'm chauvinist or something like that, but still.

Edit: Okies, now my (female of course) dark elf ranger has converted two altars, sacrificed one spellbook and whole bunch of corpses and few alive creatures and now it gave me (first sacrifice after second conversion) message saying: "The leather armor is consumed by black flames. You feel an inner strenght lifting your spirits!" I guess that is a very good thing? :D

Use the first few dungeons to train, then go on to train on random encounters. I'm a lvl. 13 male dwarven beastfighter at the moment, and haven't gone much further than the lake near where you begin. Can send you my savegame if you want (but only tonight, when I'm back home)

Btw... how do I get literacy? That might help me out alot, as I'm stuck with a cursed girdle that doesn't allow me to wear any body armour (and some other cursed equipment), and if I could read, I could understand the scrolls I pick up, one of them most certainly being an uncursing one.

I also found an altar and dropped and picked up all my equipment (I could drop, anyways) there. Now the major part of it's Uncursed. What's that do? And what's Blessed do?

Whoa, second sacrifice after double-conversion says: "You burn with the anticipation of power." Now I'm getting scared.

@Tiki: I believe you, it must be a curse upon me or something (as if it really matters). Don't know a way to get literacy, but uncursed items are regular, cursed can't be removed and blessed, well... better than uncursed, not sure how. Can't you use blessed water to your cursed girdle to remove it?
