What about giants (H) in wilderness? I think I've encountered at least hill giant near VD, however I'm not really sure.

it could be hes just running around the map though too... i did that when i started. if he wandered into darkforge or something then he could have met a DCK

If you want my 50 cents, he just met a normal random monster who walked at normal speed... while he was burdened or overburdened. The monster would be of normal speed, but because of the burden it would look like he is quite fast in relation to him. 
Just a tought.
