It has luckily done it to me only couple of times and never when I've had very promising character. That's one reason why I'm tempted to "cheat" and I've actually "cheated" some times when I've feared too much, but removed the saves when I've died. Well, at least usually, there may be couple left which I've forgot, but that's only because I've forgotten... And no one believes me anymore... :ok:

Really bad luck Tom :ok:

I've had it happen with a promising character too.  A level 20 dwarvern farmer who was just tackling the Water Temple.  I usually absent minded-ly create a backup of really good characters once every 5 levels or so.  The important thing is to delete them the moment they've died, so you're not tempted to the dark side.

Looks like you need to play more defensively, then.:ok:

Err, *puppies?* There's only one puppy that I know of, and while grats on reaching it before it died, you'd have to be *really* weak to get killed by it...

I was just kidding, I was just making my point that you die from ridiculously dumb things a lot, it's worse than playing an MMORPG.

Dude, I died from a goat or horse or some other wild *crapola* one time.
Give me a good character build because everyone else dies like instantly.

Troll fightrs and the like are hard to kill (fast regeneration, tough and strong) but harder to keep fed in the early stages until you get the hang of it. Like many roguelikes (LDC comes to mind), characters tend to die in the early stages or survive them and do reasonably well for a bit. Remember to use tactics (very important in ADoM) and rest up between fights when you can (not quite as easy or effective as in *band with its less harsh hunger system, but still useful).

Well, that's why you shouldn't try to kill everything in sight while your character's still too weak. If you don't want to play strategically, take Beef's advice and play a troll (although, if you actually  want to get past level 15 or so, you'll still need to play strategically). Sorry, but that's just what roguelikes are like.

I don't kill everything on sight. Some horse or something just attacked me for no reason and it was going at like the speed of light and murdered me.

I didn't provoke it at all.

If it was an h, then it was a dwarf. If it was a purple h, then it was a dwarven chaos knight, which aren't that deadly unless you're at a low level.

You're unlikely to encounter dwarven chaos knights (or chaos knights, for that matter, which are also purple h's) at such low levels, though. If it wasn't a regular dwarf (brown h), it must have been either a dark hurthling (grey h) or a lizard man (green h).
