heh i was thinkin often the same thing.
well there is really interesting HL mod (The Battle Grounds) in period during US independence war. basically you have those slow, front reload rifles and pistols. it needs some organised teams i guess (some fire while others reload).
but there is also a bot available for it. although i do not know how good the bot is as it was in test version.

there are some (well at least one, but since it was in the first 4 links google gave me, I expect there to be more) mods for HL that are set in WWI. also, some new game based off the U3 engine is being released next year, "to end all wars".

I don't think the idea would be very fun... Sit in a trench and then die...

yeah, the majority of WW1 was downtime, then they all of a sudden got exploded or ran forward and died. i've always thought a casual topdown game about building trenches (maybe like pipedream with shellshock) would be cool though

may I recommend WWI Medic? it gives you a feel of the kind of hopless time that WWI was, and yet it's quite addictive (not an FPS though).

I thought it had huge potential, but either I just can't get into it or then it isn't too well done.

This is old, but for some reason I thought this was extremely hilarious.
I just imagined a random person sitting in a trench and dying for no reason.
