well that wouldn't really differentiate it form the rest of the games on the shelves. whereas a strong bright colour put otgether just might attract the so much wanted customers attention.

Woah. I just finished playing through Portal and I can honestly say it's the funniest, brain-meltingest, mildly unsettlingest game I've played. Including Psychonauts. And I've still got the song to enjoy and remind me of it, plus a bunch of achievements and challenges to do. And Episode 2 and hours of TF2 yet to enjoy too. Wonderful bargain.

On that note, I've got gifts of HL2 and Episode 1, having bought them previously, to give away - anybody fancy them?

I wouldn't mind giving HL2 a playthrough. Although I'm sure someone more into FPS's would probably be able to squeeze more out of it...

Started Episode 2 this afternoon, and that doesn't disappoint either. It knocks Ep1 into a cocked hat, is utterly beautiful (outdoors? Trees? Am I still playing Half-Life?) and I just experienced the spookiest appearance yet of a certain suited individual (except possibly that calmly-walking-away-leaving-you-stuck-behind-a-locked-door thing in HL) featuring some wonderfully meta references. Spine-tingling.

does the gift pass work with other stuff? I want to buy the multiplayer package with both counter-strike source, HL2 deathmatch, and day of defeat. Already owning counter strike, could i give it as a gift?

I think it does... Don't count on my word, you should check Valve's FAQ or drop them an email at their support email.
