Even though linear campaign makes it feel restricted compared to the others in the series, it is still Fallout with a little different approach and you definitely have different ways to win the battles. I prefer close combat specialists with high sneak, mostly because perhaps the most difficult mission demands highly able ninja. Thus I also prefer night missions.

Any others out there who like it?

ive heard alot of good about it but i bought it and took it back like the next day... mabye i didnt give it enough time

It felt kind of mediocre compared to the other games, but then I never finished it (or made it very far, even), so maybe it gets better later on. I just finished the first one again yesterday and I've begun playing the second one, so maybe after that I'll give Tactics a try.

It may feel mediocre and I understand people feeling so. But at least I, and I know couple of others who like it in the end. It isn't as good as the others, but what does that tell? That Tactics isn't Excellent. It is still Fallout and good and challenging game. And it has multiplayer... (Not in campaign, but even still!)

Hint: I really recommend using some points to sneak and either unarmed or melee because of that one mission.

Some of it was excellent, especially the earlier missions against the mutants. But there were a couple of utterly crap missions, not least the one where you had to get the fusion batteries out of an old bunker. That and the robot bits were pretty dull all in all, although it picked up right at the end.

i installed it, but it just didnt look like it did the games justice so i deleted it. if you like this though, you HAVE to try Jagged Alliance 2, which mixes fallout tactics' combat with a very non-linear campaign, and buisness style management of a hired army of mercenaries

JA2 is indeed excellent, but the dialogue system is just ridiculous, since you never know what the outcome is going to be of anything before you do it.

Here's a rhino-character. Virtually unstoppable. Some disadvantages, as poor perception are easily tolerateable as objective is always to get as close as possible. Oh, and female if you want to be slim enough to fit through narrow spaces males can't fit. Irrelevant to me.

ST 10 / PE 3 / EN 10 / CH 2 / IN 10 / AG 10 / LK 2
Traits: Gifted and Heavy Handed
Tags: First Aid, Doctor and Sneak

Further on in game Perks like Bonus Hand-to-Hand Damage, Silent Runner, Ghost... You get the picture. Get close, smash hard. And in skills focus on Unarmed and tagged ones. Farsight can take Lockpicking and Stitch Barter if wanted. Especially Lockpicking is good to have, but not necessity. Remember double lockpick-wielding when getting into places you are not supposed to go. What else? Read everything you get yourself. As unarmed fighter, you'll be best driving vehicles.

And yes, I restarted, because I decided to focus solely on close combat.

It's nearly the same exact thing as Tactics, except not for retarded people, what's the difference?
