The scoring system, although strange, isn't confusing or incosistent. The basic rule is that you have to have the serve to score a point. So if you make your opponet miss the ball during his serve, you only get the serve but not a point. After you get the serve, you have to make him miss the ball again to score a point. Then, as long as you own the serve, you can keep scoring points :-)
