Here we had a new game based on the Turrican series, and it just looked phenomenal. When I finally got the chance to download this game and try it out, it was confirmed, every little aspect of this game was amazing, the graphics, the environments, the moves you can pull off, all the action that is available, huge bosses, co-op mode for two players and of course a challenging experience. Hurrican is a superb game that excels on so many levels, that it a completely new experience for any Turrican fans or for that matter any action fan, looking for plenty of action and an all around excellent gaming experience. The story of Hurrican starts in 2138, with a squad of troopers in their ship the dreadnought returning from a successful mission, on route back to Earth, when a distress signal comes through. Earth is under attack! Rockets have been fired at Earth, but their origin from where the rockets came from is unknown. The details though are soon discovered that the rockets emerged from the unknown planet called Takatis, and soon the troopers gaze upon someone they were not expecting to see. Dr. Geng X is back! His demise was well known across the universe long ago, but he has returned. Therefore, the crew of the dreadnought sets a course for Takatis, hoping to stop the doctor, before he unleashes any more havoc on earth. The crew detects an earth like atmosphere of the planet, but the soft tranquility of the planet soon disappears as cannons on the surface of the planet fire upon the ship. The ship suffers heavy damage and plummets below to the planet, as the ship itself is ripped apart by the atmosphere of the planet. Most of the crew does not survive, except for one trooper, who makes his way from the wreckage on a mission to stop Dr. Geng X and eliminate the evil of the planet. Once you load up the game, I definitely suggest you check out the tutorial mode before you start right into the action, for the sheer reason of learning all the moves that there are in the game, as there are many of them and you will be using them on the course of your journey often. You can also tweak around the preferences tab, to configure your controls, if you do not like the default settings. Once you are ready start a new game, pick your difficulty level and whether you wish to go at this mission alone or with a friend, yes, that is right Hurrican contains Co-Op mode! Therefore, if you happen to have an extra controller around, or if you want to try playing on the keyboard, although the extra controller route is more advisable, you and a friend can play through the missions together, blasting the enemies that get in your way. Your character in Hurrican is quite well equipped with different weapons, moves and much more to help you combat the main threats on Takatis. There are three different weapon types that you can use from the beginning and by collecting different powerups; you can upgrade each weapon to be more destructive and more powerful. From the spread shot, to the bouncing shot, this allows you to bounce your weapon fire off walls and other areas, you only have to decide which one is best to use depending on the situation. You also have access to powerful grenades, and even a lightning feature for your gun that you can charge up to unleash a world of pain on whoever happens to be in front of it. Your character also has access to different moves, from high jumps, to morphing into a ball, which you can then use to maneuver under small areas or simply lay bombs against your enemies. You have plenty at your disposal to deal with anything that gets in your way. As was said earlier in the review, the graphics and environments in Hurrican look amazing. Plenty of colours are used from the backgrounds, to the different enemies that you encounter on your journey. It is just breath taking to see some of the scenes and the effects that are being used. Even the bosses, in their grand size look awesome as well, so much attention to detail was used in this game, and it definitely shows, great work by the developers. Another stand out area of Hurrican has to be the music. Every stage has their own unique tunes to listen as you are blasting away whatever gets in your way, and the tunes sound great. There are plenty of sound effects also that also sound awesome, from your guns different modes of fire, to the different effects when you form into a ball or simply moving around in the water, the sound in this game is quite impressive to hear and the music is just incredible all around. Bosses also receive their own music to add to the variety of tunes in the game, superb job once again by the developers. Everything about Hurrican shows the hard work and effort that went into making such a wicked and enjoyable experience for fans of the Turrican series or simply anyone who wishes to try a different sort of game who may not have heard or played any games from the Turrican series. Be warned the challenge level in this game can be quite tough at times, this is old school gaming at its finest, and so you can expect the challenge to be at a high level. If you are looking for a different sort of game with plenty of weapons types, some cool moves, co-op mode, and an all around fantastic game that really shows, check out Hurrican and see in action for yourself.
