For anyone who ever played the original Prince of Persia game, the whole concept of a limited time limit for the whole game was a different sort of premise. Now what we have with this pack, is many different fan based creations using the original Prince of Persia engine, all wrapped up nicely into this package, with plenty of customizable options to tweak to your liking. Don’t like the backgrounds, you can change the colour, don’t like the look of the prince, you can change that, want to skip ahead to level 7? You can do that too. In the Prince of Persia 1 Total Pack, you get plenty of different custom made adventures starring our hero the Prince, each more challenging or easier than the original game and with dosbox configuration already built in as well, you can jump right in and start playing the game. The original story of Prince of Persia, if you do not remember is quite simply, Jaffar a vizier in the service of the kingdom, wishes to rule the land, and while the Sultan is away he gets his chance, there is only one obstacle in his way, the Sultans daughter. Jaffar confronts her, and produces an hour glass; she has a choice, marry him or she will die within the hour, her only hope is the man she loves, who unfortunately is soon trapped by Jaffar in the dungeon. It’s up to you to guide our hero to kill Jaffar and save the princess, a tall order and yes you have only one hour to do this through thirteen levels of perilous action. When you start the game you will be presented with the first screen where you can setup your game. Pick which fan version game you wish to use, including the original and once you are ready you can proceed by hitting run. You can modify your dosbox settings such as speed in case the game is running too fast, and even check out manuals and other information in the info section for controls. The next screen you see will allow you to modify the game itself, all from changing the look of the prince, to activating cheat mode, and you can do it here. Once you are done with that, hit OK and you are finally on your way in the game. The game play of Prince of Persia has not lost a beat, even after all these years. The challenge of not only exploring each area and fighting Jaffars man, with some good old fashioned sword fighting is challenging, but that you have a 60 min time limit to beat and having to find the level exit, in some of these big levels can be daunting. The game is tough, and it will take you at least a few rounds to get used to not only the controls, but just the movement of the Prince. The ability to modify each game to your particular liking is a nice touch to see, while it will not affect your game, unless you decide to use the cheats, it does add a bit to the game graphically at least, as you can see new created back grounds. The fact that there is thirty five different fan made games gives you plenty of variety in terms of the different kinds of challenges. Some are quite hard and really test your skills, while others are easier to get into. Some focus more on exploration and testing your movement skills, others more on your sword fighting skills. There is more than enough to choose from, and it is great to see that the authors allowed their fan creations to be included in the game. The fact that the game comes already preinstalled with dosbox is another nifty feature and again you can tweak and edit before you start the game in case problems arise. You can also screenshot the game should you choose with dosbox and video capture as well, more built in nifty features thanks to dosbox. There really is not much to say about what did not like about the game, lack of music was one of them, thought perhaps some authors might add music to their games but oh wells that’s not a big deal in the long run, the controls as well can take time to get used to, especially the movement, which is quite loose. Nevertheless this was an enjoyable series of games to play and if you have beaten the original Prince of Persia, try these games on and see how far you get.
