No tutorials ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Review For Flightgear For all of you who want to experience the reality of a flight simulator but are not willing to “pay” to “play”, FlightGear is perhaps the best (and probably the only!) option you have. This simulator is not losing out to the likes of Microsoft Flight Simulator! FlightGear is a comprehensive and robust simulator that includes aircrafts that date back to the Wright brothers Flyer as well as the latest developments in flight tech-F16s, Antonov AN225, B52F Stratofortress, even UFOs, space shuttles and stuff. The cockpits are very realistic, and the controls are standard. As it should be with every simulator, FlightGear lets you customize everything with hundreds of different options- from the plane, country, starting airport, you entire flight plan and even the time of flight. The 3D is damn impressive, and when you run the game for the first time you will freak out-for long, Open Source has been a synonym for amazingly functional software that aren’t as pretty as their paid counterparts-but not this time! However, the interface is not what you'ld want-totally cryptic! No tutorials too. Man, what a let down. Noobs, take heart! There are millions of forums on the site. Take help without fail-that gets one off the ground (pun intended) Lemme tell you, this will run on good PCs, not on the office user trash cans. Quote from the site - "Flight Gear is a fairly typical OpenGL application in terms of it's performance and hardware requirements. It requires a reasonable hardware accelerated 3D card with full OpenGL drivers to achieve smooth frame rates. Software only rendering typically yields frame rates in the neighborhood of 1 frame per second. But, with a 3d accelerated card you can expect much higher. On a 1Ghz class CPU with a GeForce card, frame rates in excess of 60 fps are reasonable to expect in many situations. The actual frame rate varies of course with scene complexity (which changes from area to area and changes as your view direction changes.)" Thats said, but dont fret! It will actually work OK on an onboard graphics accelerator with OpenGL support, and 256 MB SDRAM, though you will have to crunch the resolution to 320x240 from the Advanced settings. Anything less (on RAM) and more (on eye candy) than that, and it will leave you tearing your hair out with its tortoise-ical speed! Processor wise, I guess 1.72 GHz will do. However, since FlightGear is Open Source, it is not OS specific - Linux, Mac, Windows, all are welcome! The selection of scenery, countries and planes is vast and you need to download the scenery for the sector in which you wish to fly. On the Web site, FlightGear has broken up the entire map of the Earth into a grid of 36x18 equal sized segments, and you can download the scenery for any particular segment by simply clicking on it. Visit www.flightgear.org for airplanes and scenery. Be warned though; these can set you back by 30-90MB in bandwidth-not for the modem connections! The airplanes are smaller- most fit in kilobytes! If you are intimidated by the enormous sizes (if not, you should be! even I have trouble on my ADSL 2+!), you should go buy the entire game and world scenery on 3 DVDs and 1 CD (buy the world for $50??-lol) Overall, with features like autopilot, navigation assistance and a ton of aircrafts to fly, FlightGear is a must have for simulator fans. The site also provides tutorials and hints for modeling and getting started in FlightGear. Get over the learning curve, and have great fun! Go play, sorry, fly!
