Hey!

What do you like in a adventure game character?

Write up a profile of your dream AGS character if you have time.. if not just give a brief description of the prefect Adventure Game lead character.

My personal favourite character is Tribs from 5Days.

I've just finished playing The Longest Journey with April Ryan as the heroine.  She was an amazing character.  Nothing could stop her, nothing could stump her or phase her.  And her speaking voice was beautiful to hear.  She was a very sweet character, too, and her best friend was a bird she called Crow.  I was very attracted to the male lead from Zork Nemesis:  mysterious, brooding, charismatic, dangerous though gentle, sensitive, talented and gorgeous.  When I finished the game and both he and his girlfriend walked away in another direction, I actually felt lonely.  I liked both characters, but he had that special something extra.

I agree with April Ryan, though she was quite annoying at the beginning of the game...

I like characters that have a sense of humour without being downright silly. A few wry jokes are OK, but a character like Freddy Pharkas is a bit over the top if you ask me. And I hate it when a character gives you smug default comments whenever you try something dumb, like Indiana Jones (in The Last Crusade, that is) who kept telling you he wouldn't use his whip for THAT. Indiana Jones in Fate of Atlantis was a much better character, though - one of my favourites, in fact: cool, clever and with a sense of humour. Without being silly.:tai:
If we're talking AGS games only, I quite liked Tim and Tiffany in Two of a Kind. Both of them, really, as they complement each other.

Getting that balance right must be immensely hard for the authors though.  :tai:

I meant all adventure games

I've always had a soft spot for Manny Calvera from Grim Fandango, just the way he acts and the way he grows in the game, is something that was cool to see. :tai:

Definitely not freeware.  It's a monster-sized game spread over four CDs.  The beginning is slow and set in an unattractive future earth.  But when April 'shifts' to the magical world of Arcadia, then beautiful scenery and interesting things begin happening.  The game was released about 2000, so you could get a copy over Ebay quite economically.  Some reveiws and screenshots here

Well the future isn't that gloomy in the game. It has positive and negative sides.
The breach between poverty and wealth has grown by quite a bit (special classes) but April was quite well off without being wealthy.

That said, the sequel to The Longest Journey (Dreamfall) is due next year (Q2 2006)
Go here to look at the fancy screenshots... and there are some more fantastic screenshots on the official site, here

One thing that is a bit troubling the fans is the fact that there will be stealth and action in it (so no playing hobscotch with the evil alchemist in order to defeat him)
At the moment it is one of Gamespot's most awaited games (which isn't so surprising as the original game is the highest rated adventuregame on Gamespot, together with Grim Fandango)

Two of my favourite characters in adventure games, would have to be Tex Murphy and Gabriel Knight. Unfortunately, I'm not quite sure why I like those two in particular. I'm sure that part of the reason why I like the characters, is because I like the games so much.

Also, both characters have a series of games in which they star, instead of just one or two games, which lets you get better acquanted with them, and learn more about them (assuming that you play all the games, of course).

Like DD, I was never able to get The Longest Journey to run on my system. I'll check that link out and give it another shot, I think. Thanks Wendy. :tai:
Furthermore, it is my opinion that Carthage must be destroyed.

Another fantastic adventure game charcter is George Stobbart, from the Broken Sword series.
He's a bit of a cross between Manny Calavera from Grim Fandango (who was also a brilliant character) and Gabriel Knight (obviously from the Gabriel Knight games)

It is difficult to say why I like him as a character, because you know very little about him - safe that he is a patent-lawyer who lives in California - yet somehow he manages to really jump out as a character. Pretty much all the characters in the broken sword games are great.

Just remembered a character I always enjoyed:  Brandon from Kyrandia was the first character I ever 'played', and I thought he was heroic, selfless, courageous and funny in a noble kind of way.  If he was real and a friend, he'd be a person you could trust and rely on.  Others have complained he was too humourless, preferring Zandra, the heroine of the sequel.  I always thought she was too rough for a magical character and her acerbic nature ('What are you, a donkey?' AND 'These guys are idiots!') didn't attract at all.
