The painting is nice and I can't understand why the black wouldn't work? The contrast is still good and the amounts of black color are quite minimal. It has some ghostly effect in it, and I must say I like it.

For a while I was convinced that it was actually a portrait of Tai, and not a game character :sneaky:
No wonder, I thought it was meant to represent Tai immediately I saw it. At least there are a lot in common with the pic and her. It just might be me alone, but doesn't that siggie girl have a little ghostly looks too, mostly thanks to the transparency.

Overall, great work, but admitted, the avvie and siggie are better. It almost looks like your painting is a little unfinished and those characters need more clearer shape and perhaps a little more color. As Frodo said, the trees and color choises are brilliant.

And lastly: hopefully you'll get better soon!

I know tai's a bit ill, but she's not quite ghostly yet... :sneaky:

I really like that watercolour, reminds me of some pictures my dad has (had?) of copses in winter. I like the avatar, not so keen on the sig banner though - it's far too tall for my liking. Very nicely put together, though.

Actually, after you said that, it's true that it might be very good idea to take a little from top away. Now the forehead looks a bit large. Or then you could reposition that girl a little higher? But I still think it's great work! :sneaky:

Ya should see the forum where the sig was made for, some really large sigs over there, no real rules or anything for size lengths like here, so hence more freedom to do what ya want on la sig.  :sneaky:

Some forums allow ridiculously large sigs... But even still I'd remove a little bit from top, as repositioning keeps it large and I find too large siggies stupid. Just my opinion, though.

The character's name is Pi (in the American release, in the Japanese release, it would be romanjicized as Pai). Perhaps she's my favorite character because she does for some reason remind me of me OMG

Pi - Tai that's nearly the same, isn't it?:(

What I meant about the black not working was that the rest of the picture is constructed around empty white spaces and even in the coloured bits you can see the paper shine through. It all looks a bit cloudy. The black forms an extremely harsh contrast to that, though, because it occupies larger spaces and is painted on quite thick, so you can't see the paper underneath. Additionally, the brush strokes look quite different. Obviously the contrast was the point, but I think it might have been even better if the two parts of the picture didn't clash quite so much. For example, the black on the trees would have worked very well with the rest of the picture, but the black in the bushes makes it weigh down the picture too much, I think. Sorry, this is just my own highly subjective opinion, obviously...:sneaky:

Nothing to be sorry about, art is highly subjective, period. Some will like it, and some will hate it, and in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter either way.

Besides, I've already called it crap, so it's not like it would make much sense for me to fling rotten foodstuffs in your direction for expressing an intelligently presented opinion, now, would it?

Seriously, I understand now what you meant. I may have focused too much to the trees. After looking the picture longer and with more critical eye I don't understand why I didn't notice it earlier: yes, the contrast is remarkable and not very working. In the trees it's excellent, but in the bushes it should be spread wider and perhaps little soften to the edge, or then soften all it. I'd recommend softing it further to the bushes, actually. But not closer to the roots, there the strong black should continue. Also the grass in the left side should be a little stronger. Also the white are before the horizon should have little more color. Not necessarily much, but little. And I still refuse to call it crap. You obviously do have great potential, Tai.

Speaking of fresh foodstuffs, this is a part of a still life project I'm working on.

Posted Image

My scanner is crapping out, so the scan came out weirdly tinted and dark... I tried to fix it, but it would take forever to restore it, and I still have to finish the other parts of this still life project - a contour line piece, and an ink piece. This is the realism piece (each piece is of the same subject). It looks smoother in the real, but hey, what can you do...

Technically, it's not actually a still life, as I drew it without a model or photo to work from in order to save time and fruit.

I've signed up for 2 more art classes for next term - Drawing and Composition II, and Digital Photography (it's less picture-taking, and more photo-editing).

Like told ya last nite, it looks very good tai. :D Really like the detail the most on the strawberries and the berry and the fruit at the back, but all around the piece looks awesome all around, great job on it.

Best of luck too with your contour line piece, and an ink piece that ya still have to do and awesome to hear that your going to be taking more courses next term. They both sound pretty interesting. :)

You are making me hungry, looking at all that fruit Tai.   :)

It's really good though, I like those strawberries.  And the shading on the banana is brilliant.
