Dang, managed not to have the candle layer seperate - that was dumb. After some pixel-by-pixel removal, here it is:



I can't take credit for writing any of the messages, by the way - they're lifted from the game's death.txt file. I did have some teaser text on there but I'm not sure it needed it.

I agree. It looks great, but is missing a fitting border. It must also be said that what I think, doesn't really matter. Taikara is in control of the quality-check of any titleshots, company pics, banners and so on. She decides what we use.

Also, from now on, I think we should use the Updater forum for this, and not clutter up someone else's art topic

I'd like to see the version with the candle (as I can see in my head how to make it work, given the proper candle, anyway). Don't worry about it if it's too much effort.

It's a good concept, but as it is, I wouldn't put it up on the site yet, it still needs some tweaking.

1. Put a barely-there satiny background up, sort of like what I used for Data's birthday desktop.

2. The text-background needs more variation, and using a system-style font doesn't really make it work. Different sizes, different styles, different paths would make it look better.

-Alternatively to a satiny background, you could overlay the text in different opacities (and use more text) to make it seem more "textured."

3. I love the font for the title (it's a bit too pixelly - did you cut it out from somewhere?), but it needs some tweakage as well. A double outerglow will do the trick - a small dark one to highlight the light text, and then a softer light one to make it pop from the dark background. The one-pixel dark border with the yellow outerglow looks okay, but it's not very dramatic.

Please don't be offended - when I was training for making banners under Kosta, we spent hours tweaking and retweaking my original concepts The site banners are the only non-layout graphics on the main page, so they need to be very high quality and eye-catching.

The system font was deliberate, since it's how the message would be displayed in-game; not sure it would work if I changed it significantly. The title font is just a stock one on my system - can't remember the name off the top of my head though. It's the same one I used for the title pic when I put the game up on the site.

The original idea was to have a few different opacities of text, but I couldn't work out how to do that in PS Elements so I just made them different shades. It definitely needs a border of some kind, or something to give it a bit of structure - I got bored this afternoon and wandered off to do something else though

There's a hint of candle on the previous page of the thread, but TBH the resource pic I found was a bit crappy so I couldn't make it larger. I might have another go later on.

About the font - I figured that's where you got the idea (since it's a text game) - but the banner should suggest the environment of the game, not the environment of playing the game

And the title - if it's a font, can you try using different anti-aliasing modes to cut down on the pixelly look?

(I'm a little unsure what tools PS Elements has available)

Probably, but on the other hand I don't really do any art of my own that's not going towards my GCSEs and if I put it up here it would arouse a lot of suspicion from my exam board.

So sorry about that.

And yes, I do need to chill out. But there's a lot going on at the mo so that kind of tricky.

Still's no reason to hijack a thread. Might be an idea to start a general art thread, in such a case, where everybody could post their random works of art, if they don't feel like being able to fill a full thread with it.

On a side-note, I doubt the GCSE exam board'd look here, recognize you and make a big deal 'bout you posting your already-finished art.

Hmm possibly. Even then, it'd be best to make sure. I also didn't hijack the thread, a few other people have put art up here.

Although a general art topic would be good.

I'm glad people feel safe putting up art in my topic if they don't want to start their own, it doesn't bother me at all.

I have to concur, it is an endearingly rubbish sig... but I personally love stuff that's so bad it's good
