I used to die a lot on that level myself. The trick that saved me was to figure out that the Combat Shotgun reloads faster than the others so you can reload and fire several times in one turn.
My mistake was that I fired, took a step back, got fired on, reloaded, fired. Then repeat. That will kill you before you even have time to blink

I got quite far by playing it like I would Doom itself, with the exception that you can't dodge (or rather, it's handled by the game).

You're getting there, Potatoe. Don't give up. You always die alot in the beginning in any roguelike.
What kind of tactic do you use? How do you play the game?

@A.J. Raffles: I had the last line bolded, so the [b]:s in the inventory thing affected the text.

That is your problem right there
Your last person had the trait Eagle Eye. That means that you can see them, but they can't see you. (All the enemies have the same line of sight as your rookie soldier, without the Eagle Eye).
So, if you see an enemy in the edge of your sight radius, that enemy hasn't seen you yet. So fire away with your shotgun - and you are bound to hit him, but also the other enemies standing further back (that you can't see). By taking cover you loose the moment of surprise. Only move back if there is no other option. (As you can just as easily move into a second group of enemies).
I usually pick Eagle Eye as my first trait, so that I may snipe my enemies without danger to myself. As my second trait I go for Reloader - as it means I can fire that shotgun (and especially the combat shotgun) much much more efficiently. The shotgun in combination with Reloader is a powerful combo
After I have taken those two traits, I tend to go for defensive traits like Ironman and Tough as Nails. If you peak those two (level 3) you can suffer direct hits from an Arachnotron and only loose a fraction of your life.

You mean Cat Eye. Cat eye increases your sight radius. Eagle eye increases your chance of hitting them. But I thought I read something about it not working on that Arachno guy on WikiDoomRL. I'd give the link but I don't have it, just search it on wikipedia, it has its own whole little section. I'd reccomend it to beginners as it shows the symbols for things and the enemies and all.

A Wiki is a.. let's say it's a user-edited web site, since coming with a good description would take longer than is convenient for me just now.
Wikipedia is a Wiki.
The DoomRL Wiki is a Wiki.
Similarly, amazon.com is an online store. So is barnesandnoble.com.
But Amazon is not Barnes and Noble, and Wikipedia is not in any way connected to the DoomR LWiki. In fact, I just idly checked, Wikipedia doesn't even link to the DoomRL Wiki.
I apologize if the above sounds simplistic or patronizing or mean or any such thing, I'm just trying to communicate and I usually sound like I'm being horribly insulting when I'm just trying to explain something.
