Is the AI combat improved? or you still loose with better ships on auto mode?
I played SQ2, untill i got tired of getting beaten by much stronger oponent, plus they had some hyperspace weapn that really damaged my ship.
too bad for the time limit (they could have removed it). i just gave it up once i found i would have to restart, because i messed something up (spent too much time exploring).
A good and simple idea though. i like mixed genres.

Yeah I also don't like the time limit, but it can be circumvented if you only save after you've done aomehting productive. So explore, take notes, reload and go to the various places right on. I did that and I had lots of time to spare when it was time for the final showdown.

Aww but I liked it when it was a mystery.
The game does receive high praise though considered one of the best, very nice, even more anxious to play.

(One can't post as a guest here as in Abandonia? Well I've just registered in this great site...)
It's not that this game belongs to several genres, rather it's that it has a theme instead of a genre, like other contemporary games (Pirates!, Covert Action, Sword of the Samurai...). Games lost much of their freshness when they started to fit perfectly into one genre, and now there doesn't seem to be a way back, sigh.
I haven't played SC3 and it's such a pity that it was made into a blunder, because SC2 was intended from the beginning, I think, to have a sequel as great as itself. You would travel to the fabled Core, find the ultimate secrets about the Precursors, meet the Precursors themselves, unfold the fabric of space and time, and fight the Parasites from Beyond to save the universe. Some amateur developer could try, but he would have to forget about what is a gaming genre.

I played SC3 and I actually think it is still somewhere on my old computer.
The game is really odd, really. Back then it was the "real time strategy era" and SC3 was something like it- you were supposed to colonize planets with species from SC2 and they would develop in real time, producing more starships.
The problem was also in very big dialogues- I'm talking pages and pages of text in the game. Altough funny, one can't escape the thougth that it really was a bad game. Graphics were nice, however....

It was pretty dull compared to SC2, especially because it was so easy to die and all the speech responses sucked so I guess it wasn't very popular with star control fans, but its still a good game, Gamespot even gave it a 9.0 out of 10. (though the puppets were the only thing that stopped it from being a total disaster)

Yeah, I remember those puppets. Well- as far as I think it was too much detailed. And dialogues were just going on and on and on and on.
The simplicty of SC2, yet it's strategical elements were winning combination. The only problem is that silly time-based game play. I mean' you have hundreds of systems to explore but you have time limit ? Oh, come on! You couldn't finish playing it without a walkthrough or help from Above!

what i really hate about SC3 is how instead of harvesting resources, you just plop a colony down to get fuel. Jumping from star to star took the strategy and danger out of Hyperspace. And if you ran out of fuel, you just sat there until you got more. But hypermelee still rocked!
