That 25km/h disturbs me a little bit... Especially if it is very much not wee... :ok:

Anyways, is male average of it heavier than 500kg?

Nope, he's right enough.   :ok:

I looked up 'Elephants' on Wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant , and under 'Legs and Feet paragraph', I found this...

As both of the hind feet and both of the front feet are off the ground at the same time, this gait has been likened to the hind legs and the front legs taking turns running.[30] Although they start this "run" at only 8 km/h,[31] elephants may reach 25 km/h , all the while using the same gait.

Also Wikipedia, but also here and this refers to maximum of 25mph. Google animal speeds and you'll find a bunch of others. I couldn't find a single source, except what you gave, that would claim it is 25km/h. Though I didn't search for very long. Also, elephants have caught up healthy humans running away when enraged, but apparently fastest men on tracks might outrun them. How long is another question, but hardly the elephants can run at top speed very long...

Wiki is the first, and only place I checked.  But maybe Wiki is not always right.   :P

Anyway, it's Potatoe's turn now.   :ok:

wikipedia was my primary (and the only one outside of my own memory) source on elephants.

also that data is *Bovine Excrement*, I will have you know that the world record on 400 metres (the closest olympic distance to 1/4 of a mile) is with the average speed of just over 20 mph (do the math yourself if you wish), while article lists that of a normal human to be 27.89 mph.

Also note that 2 of the articles quote the same source (NHM for March 1974)

Did it say normal? Anyways, I thought that temporary maximum might be that 27.89mph. After all, we are speaking of top speeds. Thus I don't think that proves data from there *bovine droppings*. Anyways, 25km/h is too slow to me to believe it.

we are talking about maintained speeds, over approximately 1/4 of a mile, it says so.
As for normal or exceptional, all the other animals, I expect, were either taken randomly or were the best out of a small sample (like a pack). It would be correct to do so with humans also.
However humans being adaptive creatures have a much higher variance of top speeds, I doubt I can do even 20 km/h over 400 meters. But I still think it's a typo and they are supposed to be km/h.

P.S. oh and it actually proves nothing either way, the statistic (number) for humans could have been the typo, while the rest of the data was correct...

Okay, this thread is a 'Guess What I Am Thinking' GAME thread.  It is not about the speeds of animals and humans.  If you want to discuss that topics, please start another thread in Blah Blah Blah.
