ARGH!

OK, can it make a distinctive sound (i.e. a sound that even someone who isn't a zoologist would associate with this type of animal)?

Strange question. I suppose the ordinary fellow wouldn't know how it sounds like.
I met a goldfish who remembered meeting me before, but I had forgotten about that.

I'm only trying to figure out whether I'm supposed to think of a fairly common run-off-the-mill animal that any five-year-old would know or something slightly more uncommon, like a Sudanese speckled warthog or some wacky Australian animal that has four legs, feathers and a tailfin and carries its young on its back until they're too heavy to carry, or something like that. With you, I suspect the latter is probably more likely...:(

Anyway, would "the ordinary fellow" recognise it at sight and be able to name it, then?

I'd say a huuuuge number of people would recognise it and be able to name it.

I also asked if it was "some sort of wild bull-thing", which includes buffaloes (it should anyway). and "it's smaller [than a horse]".

does it have less than 7 letters in it's English name? (used by laymen)

Frodo: No

Frodo and A.J.: I think a deer is a deer but "some sort of deer" is something different so, yes, it is some sort of deer.
