(Ok, here's ONE MORE: "In the livingroom" is not so important. It only means that you will find it in some people's livingroom, but rarely in their say, kitchen or loo. You will find it elsewhere too, not only in people's homes. You will find it on stages, in studios, on videos and more)

Ok, here's a giveaway:

um those weird wire thingies on a round thing on a single wire hanging from the ceiling, which are hanged in odd places and make sounds in the wind?
they aren't really flexible though...

Oh please...
OK, I know I'm going to sound like a sore loser here, but most of the clues you gave were just extremely misleading, if not factually wrong. Guitar strings consist of more than just metal, they're certainly not household items unless a person in the household happens to play a bloody string instrument, and their shape is not in the least distinctive.

Guitar strings consist of more than just metal, they're certainly not household items unless a person in the household happens to play a bloody string instrument, and their shape is not in the least distinctive.

A string on an electric guitar is metal and metal only, or else they can't work, unlike strings on an accoustic guitar. Their shape is distinctive and is not at the same time. Thickness and length give shape but it's flexible so... I never said it was a common household item, you just never asked "is this found in most houses?" or something similar.
EDIT:
Is it an animal? No
Is it something you can eat? No
Can I wear it? No
Is it something I can touch? Yes
Would I find it in a house? Yes (Yes, I know, but a no would be wrong and "sometimes" is not an alternative here. Beside, it was a "house", not a "home", perhaps you just assumed it was.)
Is it a piece of furniture? No
Is it something you would find in the bathroom of a house? No
Is it made of fabric? No (it's made entirely from different metals.)
Would I find it in the kitchen? No (see, you are assuming the house is a home)
Would I find it in the living room? Yes (Knowing I go beyond the yes/no scheme: Actually, it's kinda tricky one but yes) (assuming someone there plays the guitar, you're most likely to find it in the livingroom or home studio)
Is it some form of reading material? No
Is it made of stone? No
Metal? Yes
Does it have a handle? No
is it bigger than an average household cat? No (well, it's certainly longer but all in all, no. I think we can agree on that)
Is it an item you use by putting other things on it? Yes (you use a string by hitting it with either your fingers or a guitar pick. I thought a No would be totally wrong)
So... is it a tray? No
Would it fit in the palm of my hand? Yes (again, a tricky one and related to shape)
A brass ashtray? No
A letter opener? No
A ruler? No
Is it a cup? No
Is it made up of several pieces? Yes (different layers, all metal plus a ball at one end)
Are you just teasing girls here? Apparently
Is it a figment of Midget's imagination? Nope
Is it square (boxlike)? No
Is it used to somehow change stuff? Tricky one as it's a matter of interpretation but, no. (it is used to change the sound coming from the guitar but I thought that would be a stretch)
Is it made up of several identical-shaped parts? No
Do you have to pick it up in order to use it? No (it is attached to the guitar so you don't pick it up)
Do you have to turn it on to use it? No (all you have to do is hit it)
Does it protect stuff from other stuff? No
Are all parts made out of the same metal? No (some are steel, others brass etc)
Are some parts made out of wood? No
Is it a small metal ornament? No
How about plastic? No
Is it made entirely out of metal? (and no other materials): Yes
Does it have a distinctive shape? Yes (and, believe it or not, no)
Is it something you'd use at a particular time of the day? No
Is it actually relevant that it is made out of different kinds of metal? Yes (Bummer, I did say no here. I must have misread the question the first time. I am sorry.)
Can it be used in more than one way? Damn you ask tricky questions! No normally) (there are different ways of making a string sound but in one way or another it involves touching it to make it vibrate)
Would it normally be kept in plain sight? Yes (as most people leave their guitars out of their flightcases when they're not in use)
Would you normally put it on something else? Yes (on a guitar)
A cake stand? No
Is it for decorative purposes only? No
Are all of the things the same shape? No (a straight wire core, windings and a ball have all different shapes)
Is it an expensive item? No (it's not that expensive, one string)
Would you expect to find one in an average household? No (ok, I did in fact say it wasn't a common household item)
Would you be able to just go out and buy it in a regular shop in a small town? Yes? (regular shop? What kind of shop you might wonder)
Is it a coin? No
Hint: The shape is and is not distinct, just like the shape of a shoe lace.
Is the object chainlike? No
So it's flexible? Yes
Would one find it in an office? No (I suppose you will find in in an office somewhere, but generally speaking, no, it's not an office item.)
Does it actually exist? Yes
Is it something to do with a pc? No
Is it any kind of cable though? Yes-ish (a cable can be more than a electric cable, you have cables on suspension bridges, a.k.a. wires and a string is wirelike. I wanted you to go towards cables/wires to establish the shape/shapelessness.)
But surely a cable would be plastic-coated? No (not at all)
Hint 1: It's not as much cable-like as it's wire-like.
Hint 2: As it is used by "putting something on it", it also has to be attached to something else in order to work.
So it's a metallic wire that stuff in the living rooms hangs on? No
Hint: "Used by putting something on it" -> "something" is your fingers and (optionally) a tiny object.
Is it the wire that's attached to the lamp/fan/whatever else you have on your ceiling? No
Hint: "In the livingroom" is not so important. It only means that you will find it in some people's livingroom, but rarely in their say, kitchen or loo. You will find it elsewhere too, not only in people's homes. You will find it on stages, in studios, on videos and more.
Hint: This object is usually seen 6 at the time and is related to sounds.
Is it a wind chime? No

no, it's not living.
I can think of one joke involving wearing a wire, and it's some pretty dark humor.
