Ultima did have 2D 1/2 Dungeons
and Might & Magic WAS revolutionary....although it still sucked

The game is Dungeon Master (1988) and the remake Dungeon Master Java (2001). DM really gave the genre a push and also gave at least one sequel, Dungeon Master 2 - The legend of Skullkeep, which has a review on Abandonia.

The correct answer would have been Dungeon Master Java, but it would really have been confusing had I rejected Dungeon Master.

Next Game:
You have been sent out to the Tower of Dol Guldur to rid the forest of a Necromancers evil spells.
Thats all im going to say for now. Might be to easy... Ill give aditional hints as we go along

If the Tower of Dul Guldur doesnt tell you... its a Tolkien: Lord of the Rings game
oh and the Tower quest isnt the only one... its just how it starts
(These 3 things basically say it all but i think the problem is not too many know the game... your missing out)
