Let me guess: one of those romantic comedies that are excellent material for torturers?

Unfortunately I don't have a clue, but when someone guesses it right, you can bet on that I'm going to see it!

Hints:
1. The film begins and ends on a cruise ship.
2. In one famous scene, somebody accidentally trips over a sofa.
3. One of the minor characters is a gruff butler who fancies himself a detective. Everybody makes fun of him, but ironically, he's actually right all along (but he'll never be able to prove it).
4. One of the main actors later won an Oscar - exactly 40 years after this film was made.

Right, since nobody here seems to have heard of it: it's The Lady Eve. 'tis a brilliant film, so watch it if you ever get the chance.

Thanks, I have to check it out!
I'll grab next one:
No more few crew members against impossible odds. People don't even know what has happened, but they send a task force of professional elite forces to find out what's there. But again the heroine got to do what heroines' got to do.

the person in question is our protagonist. and being a protagonist he offcourse succeeds.

in DG he become a senator, not a president.
back to our movie: however despite being a good character (and the protagonist) he is not supposed to become president, and is relived of his title before the end of the movie.
