Phew, I was assaulted by a group of novice mages on Zangband, my most promising character. I had 3 hp left and I gain a level. I'm a chaos-warrior and I get the genocide thing. So I kill off the mages with that. Phew, that was a close call.

Were you already wounded? Any chaos warrior worth his salt should be able to shrug off novice mages by the time they show up in groups. The genocide thing's best when there's screens full of some monster  - I've had it level me up again before when I'd been farming worm masses (ran into some out of depth) and they'd filled up a couple of screens' worth of dungeon :bleh:
Yeah. I had 40 hp left before the start of the battle, my guy WAS so slow. He died...
The attachment is his dump file.

I have a few comments, but you were a bit unlucky there. Why weren't you using the chaotic sabre? If you hadn't identified it yet, anything you get from your patron with the "Thou hast earned a worthy blade!" (or whatever it is) message will be worth using, it's usually a chaotic weapon with a minor hit/dam bonus - certainly FAR better than the broad sword. You also don't seem to have done any quests - the mayor in the outpost (at the top in the middle) gives you a weapon which is better than any starting sword (exept for priests, they get a penalty with edged weapons), and the Bandits quest is doable very early with a melee-type character (bit harder with mages but not too hard for anyone) - Bandits are a lot less annoying when they can only run a few tiles with your money :bleh:

The wargs quest (actually, you met wargs there - were you doing that one on level 5? unlucky to run into Lagduf at the same time) generates a really scary level message, but one-on-one they're not all that; a couple of magic missiles'll see them off pretty quick, and the reward for that is worth having too - large metal shield +5 if memory serves.

Don't forget to 'R'est between fights, either (unless you're starving or poisoned) - food is hardly any problem at all in the game since you can always buy scrolls of satisfy hunger, find food in the dungeon and visit the inn every time you're in town (it's only a couple of gold to fill you up - bargain), and it's the easiest way to regain HP/mana.

If you get the right conditions, Lagduf can be pretty vulnerable to the explosions of Snaga Sappers - target them with a ball attack (not a missile) when they're in the middle of a big group and you can take out most of his escorts with a couple of well-placed shots. Same applies to Kamikaze Yeeks and the Yeek uniques (more so than the snagas, in fact, since Boldor's so irritating to try and melee with his telporting and summoning abilities).

You probably should've had a bit more DEX than that, too - Chaos Warriors need lots of STR, some CON and DEX, and INT for spellcasting - ignore wisdom altogether and put any spare into CHA, but there's no need to worry about that - you can equip an Amulet of Charisma when dealing with the shops and switch back to another one when you go into the dungeon, and Potions of Charisma are the most common stat-raising ones, appearing after about level 20 (or even in the black market for a few thousand gold - probably not really worthwhile).

Sorry, waffled a bit there. Level 15 should be enough to tackle Lagduf, you might just need to be a bit more cautious.

The bad thing about the The "Thou hast earned a worthy blade" is that he gave me... A broken sword.

Hmm... does this regularly crash for anyone else? I haven't been playing it for long but I've had the old 'encountered an error' a few times now. Always when I'm trying to interact with something (one of the occasions was when I tried to move over some copper on the ground, it just crashed out every time).

That's very odd, it should run quite happily on that system. Have you tried redownloading/reinstalling it, and are you sure none of the folders/subfolders where it's installed are write-protected? If it's not that, could you reproduce the whole error next time you get it? Those Windows "xxx has encountered an error" ones are incredibly unhelpful, mind.
Do you get any similar errors with anything else? It's hard to isolate really, there aren't any very similar bits of software hanging around. I guess if it was a *band specific error it'd show up in other *band games (or even the non-TK version of Zangband, if you could find the same version number on Thangorodrim or somewhere).

I'm searching for some copper right now :bleh:

I take it 'read only' means write-protected? (check out my technical knowledge). I unchecked that box and applied the change, but when I looked again it was checked.

Yep - I mean, it's my computer, I'm the only user and I can change any of the other things that normally only admins can.

Heh, A couple of nights ago I created a quickie character, no thought put into the play style or ultimate fate of her - jokingly named Crasher because she was created purely to wander about trying to find something that would make the game crash like before (say, walking over copper). Not only have I not had a crash yet (or found any copper), but it's turing out to be my most successful character so far. Level 10, which is six levels better than anyone I'd previously used.

This is mainly down to the change in play style I've taken. Before - in all Roguelikes I've tried - I would simply be too impatient,  moving from one level down to the next simply because the entrance was there, without really considering whether my character was ready for it. Cue lots of quick deaths on levels 3 and 4. I just needed to get into the idea of taking it slowly and carefully. Dipping down, scouting about, collecting stuff and returning to the surface to reorganize. Each time venturing a little deeper.

I really love this game. Nothing will ever topple Dungeon master from my No.1 spot, but this is the best thing I've played in years. It's everything I look for in an adventure or RPG title, but stripped of the stuff that's usually a barrier to enjoyment (convoluted menus, cumbersome 3D camera issues, interminable cutscenes...).

The best thing about this is at one time you can be mopping the floor with the enemy, and the next you are close to dieing.

I've had like 3 close calls with this char(Dasfad, Human High-mage, Death). All came down to 1 one spell, if it weren't for black sleep I would've been a goner, also Malediction is really useful!

Malediction is great - Death magic is one of the more powerful spheres, definitely not a bad choice for your only sphere. Personally I prefer a Warrior-Mage for survivability (although they're not as good at either as pure characters) and Trump magic for a sphere - free recalls from the Tower and cheap teleport to depths rule, plus ESP is pretty groovy for detecting monsters who don't show up with infravision or detect life.

Trump is nice, but you gotta hate those spike traps...

Ugh, my warrior-mage got lamed by a floating eye....
