Now, after reading my last post on this thread, I've decided to neverever again to drink anything stronger than water... anyhow, could somebody please remind me who was it that made dwarves in JRRT's LotR? And yes, only reason I'm interested about that at the moment is that I'd like to get right god/-dess to my char..  :)

Edit: Dough.. I got Silmarillion on my shelf, it was Aulė.. so my dwarf doesn't get his right goddess..
...70 years... LOL

EDIT: Meh, I've found a Scimitar of Westernesse, a Shield of Deflecting of Reflecting, a pair of Boots of Speed and a Light Crossbow of Accuracy since then, plus mutations giving me Detect Monsters and +3 speed since then - now I'm moving at speed +11 and I'm only level 14 ;)

I reckon that this is a fair bit better than ADOM myself. It's a LOT fairer methinks.

Gah, managed to destroy my Boots of Speed with autodestroy worthless items because they were damaged and I dropped them due to a full backpack instead of using an enchant armour scroll on them. That's very irritating. I'm fairly sure I melted an artifact with an acid ball earlier too  This cahracter's having lots of ups and downs.

On ADOM the ASCII is much better, the dungeons don't change every time you go into them (a *BIG* plus IMO) and on Zangband the controls seem slightly dogey (for me anyway, things like the avatar running all the way across the map at the slightest tap of a directional key).  The Chaos Warrior class + Beastman race thing is cool though.
Anyway, the occasional out of depth monster + unexpectedly cursed items are what makes ADOM exciting.

EDIT: Plus stuff like Beef described doesn't happen.

I haven't really got all that far with Zangband, but on the whole ADOM seems a bit better balanced to me. Oh, and I can actually remember the controls.

But you don't need to with ZangbandTK - they're all there on the UI. It depends on what you get used to really I suppose - I'm used to the GUI and controls of Zangband, which means I get annoyed with ADoM's controls. It's also ridiculously easy to die right at the start, which is annoying - though that's true of some Zangband characters too.

Just a minor factual point as I browse recent developments in this thread..

All artifacts are immune to destruction by elemental attack.  You can't melt them with acid.  You can't even destroy them with the destroy command.

So you didn't destroy an artifact.

I'm not so sure about ego-items.  And of course my experience is from other *bands, so for all I know Zang went ahead and made destructible artifacts.. but it seems unlikely to me.

Doh, good point. In that case it was probably something pretty good (unique dropped it) and I left an artifact lying around there, so I'm actually worse off than I thought I was  ;)

Well, I read a review and decided to give Zangband a try.
I have one question though: Is the some sort of bigger 'wilderness map', like in ToME or ADOM? If not, is there any quick and effective (from the player's, not character's point of view) to travel for example to another cities?

It depends on the version you play - the TK variant of Angband is also in the archive, which has a limited town, but the default settings for Zangband include a large wilderness map with multiple cities (whcih should be detailed in my guide in the first post, if I got that far before I got bored with it - might finish it some day!)
Personally I tend to hang around the Outpost until I've done at least the first Mayor's quest and usually the second, then head to Telmora and do the sewer quest (but don't hang around there, it's expensive) before going to Angwil for most of the life of the character - the prices aren't bad and there's plenty of buildings (Thieves' Guild, Library, the incredibly useful Trump Tower etc.) I'll visit the oter towns to do quests from time to time though - the Old Man Willow one is tough but worth doing, and the Dark Elven Lords quest (both set by the innkepper in the Outpost) has a great reward, so long as you can deal with their guardians.

Travelling between towns isn't time consuming (there's less travelling than ADoM really) - just use the run command once you know the way, stopping to clobber the occasional monster. The wilderness has some tough monsters in it away from the towns and some low-level ones closer to, so getting some experience before leaving the outpost is a good idea.

Sorry, bit waffly there

There is a mayor? He wouldn't be one of those people I always end up killing, though, would he?

Nope, he lives in a house in the north of the outpost - most of the towns have a building which only gives quests. Those townsfolk are rather irritating, I agree - accidentally slaughtering an urchin is an arse when you're trying to roleplay a Monk or something

Aye, that and the mean mercenaries which litter the first town. If you accidently hit one of them at level one, then woe betide you!
