:) fair enough. I've never experienced a Finnish winter, so I wouldn't know.:D
I've been to the Shetlands and Orkneys in Winter, which, I assume, have a fairly similar climate to Finland, and you literally get about 30 minutes of sunshine a day. For six... solid... weeks...

And in summer, it never gets dark, so it's really hard to sleep - in Orkney for example, they have a midnight golf tournament.

When you can't sleep for 4 months and can't get up for 5, you start to go a bit crazy. And that's where alcohol steps in, cheering you up in winter, making you feel a bit more warm and sociable with others, and it can relax you enough to get to sleep in summer, which is otherwise pretty horrific.

That sounds rather... depressing... :) Were you glad when you moved away?

In some respects yes, in others, no.

Yes, in that the weather was horrendous, the food was terrible and there were few prospects there for work (other than the rigs, of course).

No, in that it's a beautiful place, and very tranquil, and some of the people are very nice (if unfriendly to outsiders).

It`s not about the place realy...
It`s about the people you are with.

Well, but there are going to be times when you're not with other people. And things like cold or absence of sunlight can influence your mood more than you'd think.

Well, in many ways the climate is similar, but there's at least one difference: as far as I know, here's a little colder, because of the ocean and that stupid-stream-I-can't-remember-right-now warms northern British Isles.

Daka, nothing beats hangover-sex - if you're not under risk of throwing up, then it's not so funny.

Hmm having sex and being drunk isn't very good, I mean you become a bit numb when you're drunk. :)

DakaSha:if you go into a kindergarden and give all the kids rubber schlongs they will prob just hit each other over the head with them
DakaSha:and you have a class of little kids hitting eachother with rubber dongs which must be quite funny (also Picklweasel knight I am)

The Gulf Stream?

True, but the nights are just as long in Winter, and just as short in Summer - that's the real problem, to be honest.

Yep, I remembered it later, but didn't have a chance to edit my post. The main issue is the darkness, of course, but I do believe that harshness of the environment has effect. However, I'm not saying that environment here would be harsher. To be honest, I'd rather take cold than moisture conditions. And I know what I'm talking about, I live on the coast. Though -15C degrees and moisture here - though I suppose it's less than in the British Isles - feels a lot worse than -30C in inland.

I wonder how no one has mentioned orange juice... Or did I miss something?
