When you can't sleep for 4 months and can't get up for 5, you start to go a bit crazy. And that's where alcohol steps in, cheering you up in winter, making you feel a bit more warm and sociable with others, and it can relax you enough to get to sleep in summer, which is otherwise pretty horrific.
