Well I'm in high school, and I cheat on the tests of subjects on which it's easy to do it, depends on the professor. The only subject where I really cheat often is accounting, it's because I hate it so damn much.

DakaSha:if you go into a kindergarden and give all the kids rubber schlongs they will prob just hit each other over the head with them
DakaSha:and you have a class of little kids hitting eachother with rubber dongs which must be quite funny (also Picklweasel knight I am)

never, never, and never... my brain stores all the information it needs for such things, and does not require external assistance.

My worst subjects are languages and math, but I'd rather take a not-so-good grade in them than cheat - it gives an honest classification of my abilities and limitations.

With the huge risk of getting caught and getting penalized and or worse again getting a bad impression from the prof (Which does not matter who you have, is not great to have) no way will I cheat, I'd rather get a crappy grade then get a zero and risk having further punishment thrown my way as a result, and even if there wasn't such a huge risk wouldn't do it, basically your cheating yourself when you do it.

Well we had an English teacher who went to USA for one year of education when she was in high school. And she told that everyone was astounded when she said that she cheated, while it's such a normal occurance it's more weird if you don't cheat, even the best students cheat here from time to time when they're overcapacitated (is that even a word? ;)), so I guess there's a huge cultural difference but also an educational differnce, because here education focuses on storing huge amounts of data, and not putting them to use. So we probably wouldn't cheat if we had your (western world) educational system and vice versa, as much as you don't believe me.
And here at least cheating is sanctioned with an F(no extra punishment), so if you know nothing there's not much to lose.

That actually sounds really similar to our education system. I mean, I never use biology or chemistry, or literature, or poetry, or calculus, or French, or Japanese, or world history, or much of anything I learned in school - in a practical way, in any case. But it's not really meant to be used in a practical fashion, is it? I think it's meant to expand your mind so that you can absorb and understand information, and cultivate dedication to practical projects.

In other words, I don't think school isn't meant to teach you subject matter, but to teach you how to learn, and to retain what you learn - and people can't even learn that when they resort to cheating.

And you get Fs for cheating in school here, too. Unless you're in college, in which case, you also get kicked out.

But the amount of data here is overwhelming for a student, I know it's much much much more than in the US, because I know people who went there to study for a year. (I'm talking about high school education) Here for instance we have 14-16 subjects in a year while in US it's much less (not sure how much less) and you get to choose (some, all?) of your subjects. Also the pace of progress is much slower in the USA so you learn things longer, I know my friend was surpised at what they learn at math. Here he had an overall 3.3 average (out of 5) while in the US he had straight As, and he had to study less so I believe there is much of a difference in educational systems.

I null voted this one.  Why does someone else's opinion matter if you really don't have any ethical doubts with regard to cheating?  Another way of saying it: if you feel the need to poll the rest of us, perhaps you do have an ethical dilemma and additionally, difficulty coming to terms with it.  Staring the prospect of failure in the face is incredibly difficult, but I think I'm a better person for doing it--whether I suceed or fail.  I know without a doubt that I've learned more from failure than success.  So from my perspective, by cheating you deprive yourself of the opportunity to learn something about yourself and improve yourself.

I've long since decided every person walks their own path with regard to ethical standards so please don't misconstrue my commentary as judgement.

I've honestly never cheated for an exam, and in reply to Tulac - We have about 20 subjects in one year. Still the amount of data is not impossible. If it was, there wouldn't be schools, as no students would be able to complete their assignments.

I never really did any homework, at all (I'm a big educational slacker), but I still managed to get B's in most subjects. Granted, I've never ever gotten an A, either, but I bet that if I actually studied, I would have.

Yo!

I'll admit our public education system does not really expect much of people, but it also is what the individual makes of it - you can take honors level courses, or average courses, or "special needs" courses, etc. Still, I wonder what you're studying that's so different. I doubt the subject matter of our corresponding courses can really be all that much different. I mean, math is still math, lit is still lit, science is still science, art is still art, etc. no matter what country you're studying it in.

As for length of time, I completed two years of high school in one year via the PACE program, which allows students to take classes as quickly or slowly as they prefer, including courses such as etymology, which isn't really standard. Again, I think our education system is what you make of it.

And I could be off base here, but I think you should be proud that your country expects so much of its citizens that it places the bar higher in its public education system. We couldn't do that here, or else our global education ranking would be abysmal. Allowing people to graduate with minimal requirements and a little hand-holding is pretty pathetic.

Well, either that, or they place the bar high to make themselves look better, which could be why cheating is somewhat tolerated (and seemingly even expected).

I can't remember any French ;)

Except a few useful key phrases such as this one:

Est-ce que je poux-aller au W.C. s'ils vous plait :tai:

I think I only remember it because I said it so much to get out of the class :P
