Come forth all ye freeware fanatics to win fortune and fame! Abandonia: Reloaded is proud to present its very first Capture the Caption tournament! The grand prize is a $25.00 USD gift certificate for an Amazon of your choice, so prepare your wit and screen-capture finger and get ready for battle.

The Captions

A "caption" for the purposes of this contest is a screenshot that is accompanied by one or more ad-lib phrases. There are two formats in which captions may be submitted - screenshots with the phrases edited in, or screenshots submitted with the phrases as text. Please see the examples at the bottom of this post if you need guidance on what is required.

How it Works

Captions must be submitted to me via email or PM (listed below). Once I have received a submission, it will be assigned a number for identification purposes. After the submission deadline, the tournament will begin. Each submission will be pitted against one other submission in a "battle" that will be voted on by the members of this forum as to which caption is the best. The battles will be in sudden-death format (also known as single-elimination), meaning that once a battle has been lost, the losing submission is permanently out of the competition. In the case of an odd number of submissions, the extraneous submission will be safe until the next round. Battling opponents will be assigned by number.

A round of battles will last two days (exact voting deadlines are TBA), and the rounds will continue until only one caption is left standing.

In the case of a tie occuring during a battle, a final decision will be made by Kosta as to the winner.

Rules

• The contest submission deadline is Sunday, September 17th, 2006 before midnight (00:00) GMT.
  
• A participant may enter up to 3 captions.  Any additional submissions will replace a previous one of the participant's choice.
  
• Screenshots must be from freeware games only. Non-freeware submissions will be disqualified.
  
• Keep it fairly clean - any caption deemed inappropriate will either be disqualified or sent back to the participant for editing.
  
• Anyone may enter (including crew and admins with the exception of myself as moderator, and Kosta as tie-breaker), but a valid email address is required for accepting the grand prize.
  
• Contest participants may vote on their own submissions.
  
• Only forum members may vote. If you are not a member of the forum, and you wish to vote on your own submission, you will have to register.
  
• Participants may not post or otherwise display their submissions prior to the conclusion of the contest. Any participant who does so will have that submission automatically disqualified.

Prize

As previously mentioned, the grand prize is a $25.00 (USD) gift certificate to the Amazon.com franchise of your choice. You must have a valid email address to claim this prize. Participants' captions will also potentially be displayed on the page of the game from which the screenshot was taken.

It's not that difficult to do. All you need is a bit of imagination and a screenshot. And there are plenty of screenshots on AR

Of course, you are not limited to freeware games from this site. As Tai stated, any freeware game will do.

I had two qeuestions about that:
1)what constitutes a "valid e-mail"?
2)can people submit several captions? and if not, can they at least send another one instead of their previous one (if they get a better idea)?

1) One that doesn't bounce.
2) As far as I know you can come up with as many captions as you like.

1. Raffles is correct - it's an email address with which we can actually get your gift certificate to you.

2. Oops - sorry about not clarifying that. Allowing people to enter as many as they like could really skew the odds (not to mention it could take a long time to complete all the battles, hehe). However, I'll let people enter up to three. If you've entered all three, and you come up with something better, I'll allow you to replace your old ones up until the submission deadline.

Thanks, Frodo & Daka. Unfortunately I can't enter that one into the contest, as it has been shown previous to the battles.

Also, just to clarify something. (So that others do not make the same mistake I did, when Tai asked me to create a sample for this topic). Banners are not screenshots, and are thus not allowed to use for the competition.

My first example to Tai (attached at the bottom) got the following response from Tai "Uhm... that's no screenshot, you know." Whereupon I went "D'oh!" and made the Flight of the Amazon Queen one. So, don't spend time looking over banners, they can not be used for this competition.
