Hmm, 3D and Free don't go together all that often yet.

The Elder Scrolls: Arena might count. The graphics are all 2D, but it's a 3D world, if you see what I mean. It was released as Freeware to celebrate the series' anniversary or something, and it's certainly story driven.

Then there's System Shock 1&2, which can be found on HOTU, but they're abandoned rather than legally free. Two great FPSs, and the latter is very scary too.

Since he said "story driven" I don't think Arena counts. Well, he also said "good", so...

Those three words don't have much in common, system shock 2 is about the only game that I can think of...

DakaSha:if you go into a kindergarden and give all the kids rubber schlongs they will prob just hit each other over the head with them
DakaSha:and you have a class of little kids hitting eachother with rubber dongs which must be quite funny (also Picklweasel knight I am)

A warning about SS2 - awesome as it is, particularly in 2-player co-op mode with the patch, it doesn't like Windows XP, or at least I've not made it run. If anyone has managed it, I'd like to know!

I managed to run it on xp, I think. I believe there is a fanmade patch or some such, out there.

Edit: Yep. I found the xp fix and this guide in my patches directory:

This fix allows SS2 to run under Windows 2000 and XP.

It still reqired the System Shock CD to be in your CD drive.

1) Install the latesh Shock Patch availble from the official website.
2) Back uo your iriginal shock2.exe.
3) Replace with this shock2.exe

Enjoy.

Furthermore, it is my opinion that Carthage must be destroyed.

I myself played this game on win98, but I'm also sure that my friend ran it fine on WinXP...

I managed to find this. It contains a link to the fix.

I looked through an SS2 forum, and it turns out this is pretty complicated stuff. According to some guy there you should do this if it still doesn't work:

Quote

You will need to edit the shock.cfg file in the System Shock 2 folder on the hard drive. Open the shock.cfg file with notepad, and add the text "safe_texture_manager" on a line of its own. This change will become active when the file is saved.

Good luck.
Furthermore, it is my opinion that Carthage must be destroyed.

Complicated?

It says to add a line to a cfg file  :)
