Probably one of the most famous freeware games in existence, Chub 3D is a completely bizarre shooter that's alot like Doom (it actually uses the Terminal Terror engine).
It's really fun, but a bit... screwed up. Definitely one of the first freeware games distributed over the net, it's pretty fun too.

Honestly most of them didn't work, I tried them again and guess what! The Winsite download worked! 
However the Gamespy download you speak of was nowhere to be found and Gamespot, you may have confused it with, didn't work, they don't have the file anymore it seems.
