[Red Fortress]

I have come across a bunch of free games over the years , and thought I would share some of them.

First up: Excalibur: Morgana's Revenge
Originally a total Mod of Bungie Softwares Marathon 2, with has since grown into a standalone FPS.
A decent game, somewhat hard at times, but polished and very playable.
(Note: versions available for Mac, Linux, and Windows.)

Number Two: HACX
Formerly a commercial DOOM 2 addon WAD, now release for free.
Used to require DOOM 2 to play, but the newest version is a standalone.
Don't know to much about this game, I personally have not played it.
But it seem to hold a pretty good reputation around the Doom Wad community, so it might be interesting.

Number Three:
Inner Worlds
Released as a Shareware in 1996 by a company called Sleepless Software.
They went bust do to advent of 3D in gaming.
Their company web page says that they have decided to give the game away for free.
The game itself is akin to Castlevania, a 2D fantasy platform game.
It is a DOS game, and will require DOSBOX to run under modern systems.

Heh, I also wanted to suggest HacX here

Wikipedia incorrectly states that it was initially released as a standalone game, while in fact it was an add-on that required Doom II to play up until the semi-official v1.2 release (October 2010) that made HacX into a completely standalone game. Here are a few more links:

Oh, and by the way, DoomWadStation still hosts version 1.1 of HacX (which requires Doom II to play), as well as the demo version and an archived copy of the old official site. There is some more info about the freeware release of HacX too.

Although the stand-alone HacX v1.2 requires a modern source port to run (Chocolate Doom or ZDoom will do fine) , it turns out that it is possible to play HacX v1.1 under DOS without the original version of Doom II as well.

Alongside the standard distribution of registered HacX v1.1 (the first version to have been released as freeware by Banjo), which requires Doom II to install, there's a plain files package that was originally made for people who have a non-DOS release of Doom II (Win95 or Mac). You can get it here:

To play this version without the Doom II installation, a configuration file is required, and also the main IWAD file, which by default was supposed to be DOOM2.WAD. HacX v1.1 uses certain files from the IWAD, including the palette. This is the major difference between v1.1 and v1.2, which does not require any external files to work, and because of this the v1.2 IWAD can be used in lieu of the original DOOM2.WAD simply by renaming it. I think it might also be possible to use the shareware Doom IWAD, but I haven't tried that out yet. The game seems to accept any IWAD, including those from other shareware/demo versions of Doom engine games (I've also tried the Hexen demo IWAD), with as much as a warning, but other games have different palettes and because of this are not usable.

As for the configuration file, you can use the SETUP.EXE programme from any other Doom engine game shareware or demo, keeping in mind that the resulting CFG file must be renamed into DEFAULT.CFG for it to be recognized by HacX.
