I am currently searching a game making engine that will allow me to make a good 2D arcade game a-la Doukutsu cave story. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, and also if anyone has some hints or sites for someone who just started out this whole programming games mess.

Absolutely nothing. Unless RPG maker counts, but I highly doubt so.

It sounds like you want to make a 2D side scrolling shooter or something similar. Would I be right? If so, then Game Maker is probably your best bet, especially as you believe yourself not to be a coder, with basically no prior knowledge. The only drawback to this, is that Game Maker costs money to run the full version.

but the full version isnt really needed unless you wanna make a fps like me

Just for the sake to not have that awfull logo, I'd register my version. But events are unraveling themselves in a way that's pleasing me more and more. Maybe I won't have to do it after all (although that would be counting on individuals that seem even lazier than meself).
