Humans make good well-rounded archers.  They also get dodge and Food Preservation.

You should have shot it from a distance. That's why you're playing an archer, right?:)
I opened a door and there it was... BOOM!

Ah. Too bad. Towards the beginning you have to be careful whenever you get the "You hear a distant wind" message. Lightning vortices are the worst of all, I think.

Trying a human barbarian now. Gotten rid of Kranach and saved Yrrigs the mad carpenter. I'm currently at lvl6. Right now I'm pondering where to next. Maybe it's time to go to CoC now and take on the first levels.. The guide only says that CoC is a mid-game alternative whatever midgame means.

Yes, and there's also a guaranteed minor vault on the lowest level. Just don't spend too much time on level 5.

Just look at this. There I was, minding my own business and suddenly WHAM! There they are. They surrounded me in around 10 turns... only way out was to flee further down and I already felt things were getting a little too difficult.

Having invisibility (from a potion or a cloak) really helps in the big room, though. Once you're invisible, switch to coward mode and run for the stairs. The longer you stay the more monsters will be generated, obviously...
Your PV was extremely low. How come?

I don't know how to raise it except for using talents. I haven't figured out how to identify objects in this game.

scrolls of identify
if blessed they identify everything. you can bless water by laying it on an altar (a good one of course) then dip the scroll in it

Not a good altar, a co-aligned one. Been playing too many high elves, have you?:)
