Is there anything special you have to do in order to be precrowned?  I think I'm nearing the point where I might get to be extremely close and I meet the level/alignment requirements.  Do I have to do anything special like praying at an alter or is it automatic?

Congratulations.:tai: No, as long as you meet the level and alignment requirements you can pray wherever you like. Provided your piety is high enough, that is.

Got to Dwarftown with my lvl 13 high elven archer. I've got a cursed ring of the fish (!?) on my finger (autocursed on me) and a quest to find some Animated Forest. I've also found some papyrus that I think is connected to the pyramid in some way. What's a good strategy to go from here?

I've tried dropping water on a coaligned altar, but it won't get blessed.... and I never seem to find enough scrolls to be able to "try out the buggest stack" so I've had to finish Thundarr's first quest to find out what I've got apart from the objects I've tried after dropping them on an altar. I've sacrified a few uncursed rings to my diety.

The papyrus is indeed your invitation into the pyramid, it avvives at level 13 and it wears off at level 19, you probably want to be as high a level as possible when you enter as parts of it are quite hard.

The ring of the fish reduces the amount of damage taken by drowning (you need two, I think, to elimainate it completely).  Careful around the forest, there is an alternative to it through the mines (there's a few staircases on the level before the forest).  Not all of the trees are hostil, but a few are.

Uhm my papyrus scroll just got "totally drenched"  :tai:
Do I need it for anything at the Pyramid?

No, you don't. Just enter the pyramid, go to the top and kill the guy who sent you the invitation. Make sure you pick up the two artifacts he drops so you won't have to go back for them. You don't have to go there straight away, though; you've got time until you hit level 15, I think.
The reason why your potions of water aren't getting blessed is that your piety isn't high enough. Your deity needs to be at least "very pleased" with you.
The animated forest is usually OK if you double-wield shields, go on coward and try to get to the stairs as quickly as possible. It's rather tedious, though. The dwarven halls are quicker, but there can be very dangerous monsters generated down there. I've had a few characters die as soon as they entered the dwarven halls because a dangerous monster was generated right next to the stairs.
About the ring of the fish, once you get holy water you should bless it for the ability to breathe water - but if you take it off and put it on again, it'll autocurse again. There are better rings available, though, and there's only one place in the game where you actually need water breathing (and even there it's not essential to have), so you might as well uncurse it and put on a more useful ring.

How could I improve my toughness? I've got lvl 8 elven warrior whose toughness is only 10 and I haven't found any artifacts that would raise it. Also, just by curiosity, does Appearance value have any effect?

Edit: Now I'm in second level of that stupid small cave and trapped. Sick, low on HP and nowhere to go, but up, where's about zillion rats and I believe to wererats... Let's hope I have enough food to get rid of that stupid sickness!

Edit2: Whoa! I made it out from there!!! Expy and exhausting trip, I'd say!

The best way to get toughness to about 25 is to eat morgia roots. Blessed, if you can. You need to eat two at a time and wait for the stat increase messages (four if you've already reached your potential maximum). It trains willpower as well, by the way. Other ways to increase toughness are to eat certain corpses, but it's a bit too early in the game for those to be around yet.
Appearance may or may not affect the prices you have to pay in shops. For some characters it does, for others it seems to be charisma instead (this might depend on whether your character is male or female). There is also a special type of room (the one about the mirrors). If your appearance is above 15 or so, you'll get a +1 charisma increase, if it's lower, you'll lose 1 perception.

yay i can correct AJ! :tai:

you dont have to eat 2 roots... it just trains it better... and eating more is a waste (more then 2 at a time that is... wait untill the stats increase then eat another two).

I thought the difference was that eating two trains both willpower and toughness, wheareas one just trains one of those stats?:tai: (Can't remember which one it was, though.)

Well, that's how I understood it from A.J.'s post. Up to around 25 that is. After that more.

hmm i think your right... but i think the second stat is willpower

*checks*

edit:

Eating 2 morgia roots, any status, will train toughness. Eating 4 morgia roots, any status, will also train willpower. If the stats are already at their potential maximum, 8 morgia roots are required. Eating more than 8 at once is a waste of morgia roots.

Would you call me a coward if I started running for my life?

I am a newbie assassin with no spells, and crappy equipment. Me thinks I should start running :tai:
