Alright, my first ever literate hero has gotten hold of the Bridge Building Manual, but when I try to read it, I get the following message:

"This book describes how to build bridges. It still contains some information you have not learnt."

I have the Bridge Building Skill.... do I have to use the Manual in a different way? I have read 8 tomes already, but the Manual won't be read like that it seems :tai:

Skill training material is different from spell tomes - after you've learnt the skill initially, it allows you to improve the skill on level up like any other skill, up to a point. According to the manual, the skill screen has an indicator - "mr" for material required, "ma" for material available.

I play adom 1.1.1... What about you guys?  :tai:

Taikara: You seems to try too hard for your characters. Most of the chraracters, especially the spell casters, are too weak at first to try to make the first few quests. When I start a new char, I alway try to guess his strenght and then decide which quest I will do, and not the opposite.

I must say that I try to save the puppy only around 10% of the times I create a new char. And 80% of those die trying.

I tryied a few times to go level to the infinite dungeon before heading to Dwarf Town... And everytime they either died or never found something interesting.

As for the Yyeriggs quest, I never do it if I already have healing. And if I feel my char is too weak, I don't do the druid quest either...

My usual way of starting out is like this: get in Terinyo. If a spellcaster, learn spells. If not, check inventory and look what I got. Then head to the small cave and try to get the waterproof blanket as fast as possible and head out. If I get to level 3 before finding the blanket, get out as fast as possible. Abord the mission as soon as you feel your char won't make it. Then I head back to Terinyo (sometimes I get good loot at the small cave) and decide if I make one of the two quests. If yes then I try, if no then I go to the shop of the evil town and try to sell everything unidentified there. If he wants to give me a lot of money I keep it since it's probably something good. Then I head for Dwarf town, I try to get there as soon as possible. Try to avoid wilderness combat as much as possible (run for it immediatly when it happen, more often than not you can run away) then get down to Dwarftown and use the altar there if I did not find one on my way to get there.

By dropping everything on the altar, I can see if it's cursed or not. When it's not cursed, I try it and at the same time it will be identified. If I don't like it, I sell it there (whatch out for the mimic in the shop) and by that time I should have got some nice guear and a nice amount of cash. If I need something in the dwarven shop, I buy it. Then use the remaining money on training, and do the Dwarf King quest(s).

From then on... Well, I'm already quite far in comparison to you. You should try this and see if it works for you too.

The version I have is 1.1.1, but I think there was something wrong with it.

Well, I redownloaded, and so far, I haven't tested the running up the stairs bit because I haven't actually had to test it, which I think is a considerable improvement. I'm also finding a lot more useful items, and random generated areas such as altars and shops in dungeons (in my previous download, I hadn't seen either one ONCE in the billions of times I went spelunking).

I'm getting a lot farther, and levelling a bit higher, but still getting killed in situations and against creatures I haven't encountered before, which is a lot more normal, imho.

I normally start the same way - go to town, learn spells, go through equipment, then go off on my quest. I just really want to save that darned cute puppy

Out of curiosity, how many levels does the puppy cave have? I died on level 6 at one point, but I've read that the puppy is on level 5, but I never found it or its corpse, and I usually try to clear an entire level :tai:

Am I in the wrong cave again? I'm going to the one that appears in the pass after I talk to the little girl, right near the starting point.

The puppy is on the last level. You should ge a special message upon entering the level.

I always start the game in the same way. Get into town find the girl, chat to her, and buzz off as fast as possible into the Puppy Cave. Then I try to save the puppy.

I am successful 70% of the time. 20% of the time, the puppy dies. And in the last 10%, I die.

The place I usually die in is that darned carpenter cave :tai:

You know, I'll really have to play a quick game of ADOM again. Just one random character...

Edit: Dang. Got to level 6, but then Ogle the orcish priest was unfortunate enough to encounter a tension room full of blink dogs and kobold shamans.:tai: Oh well.

Random character, gave me human fighter. :tai: Well, I thought it was not ok. Now I however am at level 11, bashing enemies to oblivion like nothing and I got cute little blade with me! Green adamantium broad sword of vampirism (+0, 1d7+7)!!! Doesn't matter it has +0 to hit, it's just wonderful. Now I keep berserker as my standard tactics, because it doesn't matter if someone hits me, because that sword drains life energy from my enemies! On my other hand is large crystal shield (-1) [+10, +2], giving me nice protection! However I'm still missing decent armor, because my initial chain mail got little bit rusty, being more hindrance than protection, so I'm wearing quite basic studded leather at the moment. But I have a question, what does broad sword of surrendering do?

I think it reduces your chance to hit or something like that. Something negative, anyway...
You should go for "very aggressive" (F2) rather than "berserk" (F1), by the way, as you won't get any weapon marks otherwise.

Any? I've raised my Swords from level 4 to 5 and now I have only 60 marks to go to level 6. Perhaps you mean as many? If so, I'm changing it right away. Btw, found mithril boots, got little PV from there, as well as +1 to hit and damage!

Sorry, I forgot to post about this earlier:
Why was your strength so low? Only 10 at level 12?:tai: I'm also a bit surprised that you don't seem to have encountered any spider corpses so far.
The weapon you had was definitely nice, but a nice weapon alone can't save you in the small cave when the monsters are already too experienced for you to handle. At that stage you definitely don't want to be strained and at a speed of 93... Drinking a potion of invisibility before you enter the cave can help.
Eating the pepper petal or putting the spenseweeds in the tool slots and 'u'sing them might have given you a few extra HP, and blessing that potion of extra healing would probably have cured the poisoning as well.
DV/PV is OK, but the PV could have been higher. And you're starting to use missiles - I'm proud of you.

Thank you, mistress. :tai: Actually my strength was that low because of that damned undead. And nope, no spider corpses. Honestly. And I was strained because of my sudden collapse of strength.

New beloved one and again Dark Elf Priestess! Take this: uncursed frozen morning star (+1, 2d5+1), ok [-2, +0], uncursed medium mithril shield [+5, +1] and strength 18 (24)! Oh, and my initial elven chain mail was [+0, +7] and blessed. Haven't encountered foe that would survive longer than 5 turns in front of me. Good if anyone has survived 4!

Depends on how you kill them. If you answer yes to 'do you really want to backstab the foo', it's a chaotic act. If you zap it with a spell or "accidentally" hit it with a missile, it isn't. You shouldn't try to sacrifice animals, though, I think.
