I'm actually a very good tactician, I've been playing games all my life, and though I've never played a roguelike, there's never been a game I can't beat.
The messages don't tell you *where* the ant room is, just that there's an ant room on the level. And typically, I simply try to avoid it as a low level in the puppy cave, since I can't quite pick them off easily yet. Either by avoiding unnecessary rooms completely in my search for the staircase, or by running past as quickly as possible, and killing off the couple of spawned ants that aggro'd in a safer location.
If I always ran back upstairs every time I saw the message "you hear clicking", I wouldn't actually get anywhere.
However, although walking through the door into the ant room filled to the brim with ants annoyed me, it's more the dungeons in which I walk down into a summoning mob that is agitating as hell. There's no warning for that, and it's happened so many games in a row now, that I find it a bit weird.
The fact that I never find beneficial items, and only cursed or useless items is weird, too. Not to mention I rarely start the game with beneficial spells or equipment. The last two games
in a row where the first levels of the beginners dungeons filled with water was pretty much the last straw. I know that everything is generated randomly, but random generation also tends to mean you catch a break here and there.

oh and you can exit dungeons during battle (at least between levels).... you just cant leave a battle on the overhead map. enemys will follow if they are next to you but its better then facing the whole room
edit: if you enter a crazy room..... get straigt out
Uhh. Then I know something's wrong, because every time I try to go back upstairs during a battle, I get a message saying I can't during battle.
Edit2: and just so no one accuses me of retardation, that happens on lower levels, not the first level.
