That's what I generally attempt to do, but I don't have much choice in the wilderness, and this last time, the only possible way out was through the mob. The sorcerous caught me as I was inside a big, (previously) empty room with only one exit.

dont wander around the wilderness either... there is no point. its dangerous and wastes valuable game time.

like ive told everybody else if you dont mind spoilers (and believe me knowing EVERYTHING about ADoM isnt going to make it THAT much easier + ADoM is made for reading spoilers) read this:

Yes, try to avoid the wilderness at first. Explore the village dungeon and the puppy cave (or try going through the small cave if you're feeling reckless) and gain a few levels. If you're faced with a summoner, try to kill him before any of the summoned monsters by firing a missile, casting a spell or zapping a wand. Try not to let them summon anything or as few monsters as possible.
About trolls and food, I assume you've read the previous posts. It's really not all that hard to find enough things to eat - buy a few rations from Muxnip first, but during the early game, the only thing you need to stay away from are kobold corpses; all other corpses of animals and humanoids should be safe to eat. (Except for the cute dog corpse.)

Hmm... maybe I'm in the wrong cave... I'm looking for the puppy cave, but perhaps I'm in the "feeling reckless" small cave :tai:

Were there two scrolls genreated on the entry staricase?  If so, you're in the small cave.  The monsters generated there have twice the amonut of XP as you so it can very tough, very fast (get out before level 5).  There is a guaranteed waterproff blanket and a staircase to more dungeons, that are safer.

Yes, I must have been feeling reckless... I was in the small cave :tai:

I was getting incredibly tired of that endless dungeon to the southeast of the village, so I was trying new starting places.

Yeah - the small cave is a stupid place. It is the first place you see, and the most dangerous... Lost many good warriors there.

The puppy cave and the carpenter cave only get visible after you get the quest.

It can be great for XP early in the game, plus the blanket always comes in handy.  I just go in, get the blanketm, and thenb either down the stairs to the Unremarkable Dungeon, or back up for other quests.

By the way, what is the deal with that everchanging cave down South? My previous character fought all the way down to level 15 and searched every wall for secret passages. And as I found none - I just had to go up again :tai:

i always go the same route:

Puppy cave, village or keethrax cave, small cave, unremarkable dungeon, high mountain village

Since it's ever changing there's no need to search for hours.  just go back up, and then down again to progress further.

I agree, but it can be a bit dangerous for an elf. They start out comparatively weak, and a priest won't start with particularly good weapons or armour either. For a level 1 elf it's probably best to make a quick dash through the small cave, try to find the exit (and if possible the blanket) and leave straight away - either through the unremarkable dungeon or through the exit to the Drakalor Chain.
