The thing has really good stats; (-1, -2) [-2, +4], but I just got a Black Dragon Scale Mail that I really want to try out...

There are various ways of getting rid of trapped armour:
- have it destroyed by an acid trap (take off everything else and drop everything you're carrying on the square next to the trap first, though. You should have acid resistance as well. And watch your HP, obviously.)
- dip it in a blessed potion of exchange.
- dip it in a blessed potion of raw chaos (bit risky).
- go fight a rust monster and let it rust the armour to bits.
- go to Terinyo, take off all your other stuff, drop all your equipment in a nearby square (don't let the villagers steal it, though; might be better to go to Lawlenilothel, actually) and go for a swim in the lake. If you have swimming, that is. If you haven't, you can still do it as a troll, but watch your HP.

Use a scroll of item destruction to get rid of that armour.  Oh, and it's really not that good, it make you less likely to hit and takes two of DV, giving you back about 4 PV (DV and PV can be regarded to be worth about the same).

Does a scroll of item destruction really work for trapped armour? I remember trying that in one game, and it didn't work for me, even though I used at least five scrolls. They just turned to dust.

Anyway, dragon scale armour is a far better choice. It gives you a much higher PV and an immunity, which is also nice, obviously.

I just started playing this week since I've been sick, and needed something to fill up the down time.

I just have to say - this game is freaking INSANE.

What is a level two gray elf priest expected to do against a summoning sorceress (and her billions of summoned minions) in the FIRST level of the LEVEL ONE DUNGEON?

And it was a good character, with high strength, decent health, high literacy and detect item status, and a RIDICULOUS learning ability (5 skill increase choices per level, and able to choose 3 starting talents).

I mean, jeez.

it really isnt that hard tai. you just got to know how to play... a wizard  (edit... whoops priest... but all the same) will DESTROY all those pesky creatures

... I was once attacked by a billion jackals and tried to run away, but apparently, you can't run away if something's attacking you, which is difficult, being surrounded.

The same goes for the above scenario - it's hard to run away when you're surrounded, and behind you is a dead-end. I even prayed twice, and was healed twice.

I wish Kryllia (or whatever the god's name was) would have just smote the darned sorceress rather than wasting her energy healing me

Oh well. Time to make a new priest. (I rather like the Literacy and Detect Item Status abilities).

Granted, I don't have patience to actually read a command list, there's probably some key commands I'm missing out on. For example - something that may allow me to push through hordes of beasts and run the hell away?

yeah its [Direction of enemy]... you should get the message: "You turn the orc into a mangled heap"

A grey elf priest is a hard optino to start out with.  Gray elves in general are hard work and so are spellcasters.  Good luck with the current character, obviously, but next you could try a human fighter or orcish beastfighter.

EDIT: Actually, priests are quite good becuase of detect item status and a good balance between weapon skills and magic, but you could try playing a human for a slightly less feeble character.

Why not a troll? Trollish priests should be literate as well...

My first two character were both trolls, and I never managed to survive past several minutes because trolls need too much food. My best  luck with keeping a character alive thus far has been a dark elf Healer (randomly generated).

I seem to do better with elves and drakelings than any other race thus far, it's mostly a matter of whether I get ganged up on or not at this point.
