Trolls are the race which need to eat the most often. Basically, everytime you have a corpse you should eat it (unless it is bad for your health) and you should be fine... Trolls are just like that, they eat everything and worship what they can't eat... Which mean rocks.

As for identifying things, the easiest way in the beginning is to drop all your gear on a coaligned altar ( for extended drop saves effort) then pick it back up, that'll give you at least its status, then try using/wielding the stuff which isn't cursed, basically. Once you get a couple of stacks of scrolls, one of them is probably scrolls of identify. If you can't read it's more awkward. You could also play a merchant, they're very good at identifying things - their speciality items are ID'd on sight. Difficult to play though.
Trolls have to eat twice as often as other characters, so you'll need to eat corpses pretty often.

Or be uncool and play a farmer. They may not sound as cool as the other classes, but they're not bad at all, really. One of my nicest winning characters was a farmer. Farmers start with lots of food, food preservation AND a few precious herb seeds, so if you wait and put a few points into gardening and choose the right spot, you can grow a little stomafillia garden in no time. They might even start with a cooking set, but I'm not entirely sure about that.
Or play a monk. They need less food than other classes.

You have to be a bit creative about food, but there are several ways of avoiding starvation:
-herbs. A few dozen blessed stomafillia herbs and you're set.
-corpses (obviously). You don't HAVE to eat corpses, though. As I said, my veggie characters were surprisingly easy to play (the only thing that was a bit annoying was not being able to get resistances or teleport control).
-cooking skill. Makes corpses more nutricious and makes them last longer (unless you spoil them by trying to cook them, that is)
-survival skill. Takes up rather a lot of game time, but it does help while you're travelling across the wilderness.
-wolf birthsign. Makes food more nutricious for you.

In general, remember that quite a lot of things can be eaten, including bones, beeswax, fortune cookies and seeds. When you're really desperate even a potion might save you from starvation - try to make sure it's safe to drink before you quaff it, though. And if all else fails you can pray for satiation as soon as you go to "starving". Provided your piety is high enough, that is.

Let's not forget the ratling traders in the arena.  The cooked lizards are the best things they sell.  They only weigh 3s (I tihnk) and provide a good meal.  I buy about 50 when I get there  I've never run out (ie, my characters always die before coming anywhere near running out).

Yes, but stomafillia herbs are even nicer if you can get them. Much more nutricious.

Goddamn it, there's somewhere wererat even though not in sight and it somehow just keeps on summoning more of those bloody rats. Not that I can't handle them, it's just annoying if I'm going starve in front of huge mass of rats! Well, if I set to coward I guess I could eat easily in safe, but but, someday my food ends...

Edit: forgot to attach that file... :D

Hey, that looks like that time I was in the Animated Forest. Couldn't go back upstairs then, as upstairs, there was a friendly grey jelly that kept dividing, and alot of those divisions walked into a Chaos trap, making them Chaos jellies, while all the other jellies were blocking your path. So... either fighting Chaos jellies and lowering your allignment by killing docile jellies, or fighting your way through the Animated Forest, which kept blocking your path

But there's only two rats between you and the corridor. Why don't you just head for the stairs and leave those rats for later? There might be something edible down there.
By the way, this wouldn't be a troll by any chance? Trolls can eat rat corpses without vomiting.

A.J. I fought towards that corridor! Never got an opening. But neverthless, I survived, as that stupid wererat came too close. I got over 3'000 experience! But now I'm scared, got this message after sacrificing:
You suddenly feel a chilling cold. You burn with the anticipation of power.

Edit: Btw, I'm a bit disappointed. Didn't you check my stats? A troll??? No way, dark elf! Which I seem to fallen in love with! :D

Uhm... how do I cure sickness? I just ate a Kobold, and my tummy didn't like it. If I pray I only get full life (which then drops down, as I am sick).

Do you have curaria mancox herbs or potions of healing? Is Jharod nearby? If the answer to both is 'no', you'll just have to apply first aid every time you get the "wracked by feverish fits" message and hope that you'll live.

@Juni: I didn't look at the stats, actually; I must have got mixed up - Tiki is currently  playing a troll, though, right?

I am the Troll, A.J.

And I can't seem to apply First Aid or even Healing. I have them both, but I can't seem to figure out the commands.

My first troll walked around sick for a year, without dying, though. So maybe it's not such a huge deal (apart from having lesser health).

I'm playing a dwarf. I always play a dwarf  Lvl. 15 Dwarven Beastfighter, to be precise, who, after figuring out how to pray, did it so many times he got: "Mortal, ye art a nuisance!" :D It's understandable that you got it confused, though. 's Not like you can see me, what with my blessed (by praying) ring of invicibility ;P

To apply a skill jsut use the "a" key and then sleect the letter of the skill you want to use.  Only First Aid can be directly applied, healing is a passive skill that raises your natural healing rate.  My main uses for First Aid is stopping myself bleeding and using it every tiem sickness/poison hurts me.

Ah, I see. It can only be applied when you get the message. How about selling stuff, how's that done?

I tried giving a merchant some clothes, but that didn't do the trick. He just said he didn't want it.

And I managed to save the doggy
