Yeah, I was aged 34 years... Damn ochre jellies ambushed me in poor condition, right after killing Yrrigs. Poor me, never get far.

Depending on your playing style you might find another class/race combination easier to play. How do you usually go about playing?

The key to playing elementalists is to be economical with spells and not to neglect training melee and missile weapons as well. Especially the latter can be a lifesaver.
Do you still have the flg file of your most successful character? If so, what does it look like?
Edit: Just noticed there's an awful lot of questions in this post.

Well, anyway, it's aj.raffles [at] gmail . com.
You can save the dog, but you need to be both quick (it dies after four days or so) and lucky (level 5 is tough). I've done it a few times, biut most of the time I die trying.

- your DV isn't particularly high, but the PV is much too low for a character that's level 10. I'm surprised Yrrigs didn't kill you... wait a minute, you killed him, right? Anyway, next time try to scum the ID for some additional equipment. Even a measly run-off-the-mill leather armour will give you 2 extra points of PV, which you badly need. A metal cap should give you at least +1. DV/PV is another reason why you should train melee weapons.
- your strength is still fairly low as well, probably because you didn't train it by getting burdened. Try carring some junk around with you during the early game, so you get the "your muscles feel stronger" message a couple of times. It's better to be burdened (or even strained) during the early stages of the game and to train strength than to get the "porter" talent straight away.
- I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think a ring of damage only affects the hand on which it is worn, so wearing it on your left hand while wielding a weapon with your right hand doesn't make much sense.
- you've hardly trained melee weapons at all, which means that once you run out of pp your character will be screwed. That mithril long sword is a decent choice, but pole arms (i.e. orcish spears or the like) might be more useful because they give you better DV.
- no missile marks at all - tsk, tsk. Don't tell me that none of those 17 kobolds dropped a short bow and some arrows. Missile weapons are extremely useful to all kinds of characters, especially to magic users.
- you've nearly used up your castings of most of your spells. That's not a good strategy in the long run. It's not an issue in early game, but eventually an elementalist will run out of castings if he doesn't have any alternative way of fighting.
- if you have to kick doors, try doing it while on coward setting. Generally, kicking doors in the ID isn't worth the risk anyway. If you come across a locked door, just go up/down the stairs and try your luck on another level.
- you might want to get the "treasure hunter" trait next time. It lets you find more items (not necessarily better ones, but if you find more items, your chances of finding a good item will be better as well, obviously). Requirements for "treasure hunter" are "alert" and "miser". Keep in mind that you can only pick "alert" right at the beginning, though. "Miser" and "treasure hunter" you can always pick later on.

For some reason I've never even thought of wearing any heavier armor than robe or like, must have something to do with those stupid D&D based games. Next time I'll wear armor. Somehow I usually just don't seem to find metal caps...
Also this was one of my first characters, so I didn't even know that burdening or straining myself would grow strength. Now I did, even before you told me. And that ring of damage rule is plain stupid and still logical at the same time. To be honest I don't even recall did I ever manage to identify it!

I believe my quarterstaff was destroyed somehow, therefore I had no choice but use that sword and shield. I also somehow seem to forget missile weapons when playing spellcaster.
I'm no coward!

Hmm, I have to remember that Treasure Hunter trait. But anways, thank you master, I just might learn my lesson! (Or then not...)

I agree that sometimes you have to kick down doors. Not in the ID, though.
