I've tried a bunch while getting a hang of what's going on.
Using a gray elf wizard atm.
He's delicate, but starting to get pretty nice dmg output.
Actually, it's at the stage I can enjoy the game without forgetting buttons.
If there's any death happening it's mostly due to luck, which unfortunately is a huge factor  ;)
All my gear just rusted in the rain too.

oops, disregard.
Just got killed in one hit by a swamp hydra ;)

Sounds like you should train in the dungeons a bit more...;) Try to find a waterproof blanket or at least a hooded cloak (that only protects the equipment you're wearing). By the time you've found those, you'll probably also have gained a few levels.

It's also a good idea to train missile skills if you find any bows and arrows/crossbows and bolts. Missiles are nice as a backup in case you run out of spellpoints while fighting a monster you can't take on in direct combat.

About swamp hydras: if you encounter them with a low- to mid-level character, don't bother trying to fight it. Try to get to the edge of the map in as few moves as you can and make a run for it.

Thanks for the advice, bud  :P
But these lessons got learned the hard (ie, only without looking up internet) way.
Also, apart from the hydra I've been blitzed by:
a steel golem, a chaos thing and a guy with a nasty magic attack.
Death strikes swiftly in ADOM.  ;)
In fact, I'm going for another round now.  ;)

If I were you I wouldn't worry about killing cats. Before you reach the cat lord in the Caverns of Chaos, you have to have at least a) killed Rehetep for the only guaranteed artifact that allows you to see invisible (the cat lord is impossible to fight while he's invisible and you can't see him) b ) cleared the Tower of Eternal Flames (to get past the wall of flames) c) got the Ring of the High Kings (to get past the eternal guardian) and d) visited the Dwarven graveyard and freed Griff's spirit (to get past the portal). Realistically speaking, it'll probably be a while until you meet him for the first time anyway, so there's no real need to avoid cats until then.;)

I'm pretty new to ADoM and I was wondering, what happens after I use up all the castings for a certain spell? Do I have to re-learn the spell? If so, how?

Yes, you'll have to learn it again from scratch by reading spellbooks (i.e. your castings won't be as powerful as they were before you "forgot" the spell). Potions and wands of wonder can also give you a few castings if you're lucky, though.

Just a bit of general advice: Spellcasting seems very handy when you're starting out, because it's quite powerful, but it's a good idea to try not to rely on spellcasting too much. That's not only because of the whole running out of castings/spellpoints thing, but also because you won't train melee weapons enough that way. If your character is too weak for direct combat at the moment, try using missiles instead of magic every now and again, and whenever you can kill a monster in direct combat, do so. Training up weapon skills is vital for your survival (among other things, it brings up your DV). Unless you're a very experienced player, it's nearly impossible to win the game by using magic alone; you can survive OK until midgame, but then it'll get tough, and even if you survive until you reach the lower levels of the Caverns of Chaos, the mana temple will probably be your downfall, because there are plenty of spellpoint-draining monsters down there.

I'm not actually a milllion miles away from that stuff with my current guy  ;)
Don't worry though, I fully expect a random encounter with some ubermenschen superchaos hyperfiend will destroy me and my sexy new cloak of invisibility and ring of invisibility being able to seeing  ;)

Careful with that invisibility stuff, wearing it makes you hungry fast.

I'd only put it on in very dangerous places or if you need to make a speedy escape.  Intrinsic invisibility (from pools) is well worth having though, especially if you have that backstabbing skill.

Can easily get a bunch of those stomachfillyouup herbs blessed for any and all of your satiation needs.
Hunger's the least of ADOM problems once you get past the dwarf town, apparently  ;)
Recent deaths include: an ever-multiplying slime multitude, some unicorns, possibly got eaten by a grue  ;)  and Griff the dead dwarf.
This is one hard game.
Not that I don't like a challenge, but damn...
It's a hard game  :P

Any experts on pre-crowning in house?
My little fella just can't get lvls fast enough for all those artifacts that are spawning, so no pre-crowning  ;)

What level are you and how many artifacts have been generated so far?

lvl 14 and 6 artifacts or so.
I'm mostly curious about how to get close enough to your god without having to move through the game finding artifacts.
Pulled it off with a chaotic, but they can sacrifice anybody  ;)

Easy: sacrifice lots of blessed stomafillia herbs (provided you can get your hands on them, that is).;) Obviously you'll waste some time harvesting them, but it's a fairly efficient way of getting your piety level up.
