No, it's not permanent. Should only last a little while (couple of dungeon levels at normal playing speed). Just hang around and train some weapon skills until you can talk again.
I eat harpy corpses fairly often with non-magical characters, they're not dangerous apart from that.

Thanks for the answer, Havell. The muteness passed indeed, though my poor wizard died a few levels later wasted by the black fever. ADOM is often cruel...
My latest character, a human mindcrafter, has had the misfortune of encountering white worms. These bastards remind of the mice in ZAngband: they breed incredibly fast (though in the white worm's case, it's simple duplication). The problem is they've infested the room with the staircase down, so it's now impossible for me to cross the hallway leading to it as they spawn faster than I can kill them. Apparently, they're also brainless, as all my mindcraft attacks are powerless against them. I guess I'll have to leave the carpenter's cave and move on... to return later and give them hell!
Speaking of the black fever, is there any way to cure illnesses? I've searched through a popular guidebook, but there seemed to be nothing about the latter. It is somewhat anoying to know your character is doomed inevitably after a certain number of turns. I think I've only survived sickness once, playing as a troll.

I think it is possible, but it's been a while I've got ill, so I can't remember at all at the moment. Though I think that if your god favors you enough, he/she may remove it by praying.
Quick edit: at least there's cure disease spell...
I encountered book store in PC: 2 and found something I've never seen before: A black tome of Alsophocus, costing only 100979gp, so I have no realistic chances to buy it at the moment, but just wondering what the heck is it? In many ways the book store would be nice, but I have to find some gold before I can even consider beginning to buy anything from there: costs are varying from 350 to (ignoring that 100k gp tome) 5500gp. And I don't know, I'm playing as assasin so I don't think I have any hurry to get here.

The Black Tome is REALLY bad news. If read, it gives knowledge in a random spell and a hell of a lot of corruption (about half a corruption's worth, ie, if you read it twice you will gain a corruption). It contains "The essense of chaos and corruption", which means that even carrying it around with you will corrupt you quite considerably in not very much time. Even it having been generated will mean that you have to wait three more levels if you want to be pre-/post-crowned.
Sickness is a nasty one and often spells death for lower level characters. Eating curaria mancox herbs is probably the best way, if you can find any. Failing that, potions of healing will cure your sickness most of the time (all of the time if blessed). Also, sickness doesn't last forever, if you can survive (by first-aiding yourself or something) and stay out of trouble (about half of my characters that die of sickness die becuase they are attacked by something and can't handle it due to reduced stats).
And now it's time to show everyone my current character. He's one of the best I've ever had, certainly the best spellcaster. I had the misfortune to lose teleport control while pool-drinking, so I'm looking around for a blink dog (before I do anything, really). I'm also ready to tackle the Tower or Eternal Flames, but I can't seem to find a Ring of Ice anywhere (I'm considering just putting all my non-arifact stuff in my pack and doing the Tower nearly naked).
Tell me your thoughts about the character/strategies for how I might better scum for either of these things. Just what levels of the ID or whatever I should scum to find the Ring of Ice would be handy.

The Big Room works quite nicely, if you don't mind dealing with summoners every so often. You're bound to get a blink dog in there somewhere, and if you don't fancy fighting semi-weak monsters, you can always head over to the Tomb of High Kings and fight there for a while in the hopes of finding a blink dog. Or you could try the Banshee level, as I usually find a blink dog corpse there. Just be sure not to kill the first one and let it summon friends. I always rename it something like "DONTKILLTHISONE" just to be sure.

R Havell, thanks.
Next one: I'm playing as a DE Priestess (my favorite came by random) and I have identified everything else's status (blessed, normal, cursed), except this one tome... Guess it's artifact and thus I'm not sure what to do, as I don't happen to have any identify-scrolls with me. Nor can I cast it. Any ideas of how likely it's something soooo bad that I should drop it immediately? Actually I'm tempted to do it even without waiting any replies. Then again... I might take a risk and read it... :/

It's probably a tract. Tracts of order weigh 250s, of balance weight 200s and of chaos 150s. Tracts of order remove corruption and tracts of chaos grant it, both at the expense of piety. They also shift your alignment ot whatever alignment the tract is. Obviously you should stay away from tracts of chaos. Tracts of order decrease corruption by very little for the piety and time needed to read them, their only real use is to get rid of an undesirable corruption and hope for it to be replaced with a better one.

My game's taken a strange turn now. I went back into the Caverns of Chaos so I could go to the big room to look for a blink dog and nipped down to Dwarftown to use the altar. I was trying on armour when I put on some trapped crystal scale mail, I used all my scrolls of item destruction in trying to get rid of it (didn't work) and I didn't have any potions of exchange (best way of dealing with trapped armour). So I dropped all my stuff on the dwarftown altar, picked up a wand of trap creation and went to the level below Dwarftown, and started creating acid traps and triggering them to destroy the armour, this wasn't working, so I tried exploding door traps, which also didn't work (crystal is resistant to destruction by these means). I gave up and decided to just keep adventuring until I found a potion of exchange.
When I got back to Dwarfton and my stuff, I picked it up and went ot put my equipment on, I discovered that several of my better quality things were missing, the priest had picked them up! This stuff included 200,000 gold, all my seven league boots, about 5-6 artifacts and all sorts of other loot. I was despairing over what ot do, pickpocketing didn't work ("...has nothing of value") when I noticed that one of the items he'd pick up was the Chaos Orb of Elemental Water. This made it so that I had no choice but to kill him and get it back. I closed and locked the temple door, and started casting Burning Hands on him, he went down after about 5 blasts. The gods weren't happy about this and destroyed my equipment, the only things I was wearing was the trapped armour and the Staff of the Archmagi (I didn't see this coming, I was happy). I Got all my stuff and opened the door to escape (no teleport control to escape). Had to kill Waldenbrook but nobody else could see invisible. I'm now in the big room, and just ate a blink dog corpse, which is cool. I'm now intending to tackle the Big Infested Temple, as I've never been there before and there's lots of cool stuff there.

Why do you keep your stuff in the church? You'd be way better to hide it to the top left section of the town, behind the shop. There is only one way to get there (by the right) so the citizens barely ever go there, and if you have lockpicking and a wand of door creation then you can barricade your possessions there. You'll never be robbed again.

I don't normally, I just forgot that time, I was only keeping them there temporarily.. My usual place for storage is the Dwarfern Mystic's room. It's impentrable except by teleportation.
Anyway, I was doing well in the Bug Infested Temple (almost cleared the huge room full of bugs that's at the end) when I got trapped in a room, held them off for a while but as I'd killed hundreds of them (406 in total, according to the character record), they became too powerful and I could only blast them with my fire bolts a couple of times before they reached me, each one knocked off a little more HP and I couldn't stop to heal becuase of the need to keep on blasting. one of them ended up killing me

Silly waste of a character really, I should have known better than to have stepped into a side room like that on a level where teleportation is impossible.
Ah well, he's sitting proudly on top of my high scoreboard now, and it also means that all my top 5 (the 5 you see when the scoreboard is opened) all have six figure scores, which makes me feel cool.
