I went to Darkforge, but the Steel Golem guarding the down stairs was too tough for me. I had to drink all my potions of healing, and even pray once, in order to kill it. Basically I hit it all the time, but 90% of the time I did no damage. When I did hurt him, I only did a very small amount of damage.

Oh well, at least I killed him in the end, but it did make me realize that I need to be a bit more careful from now on. After that I went to the Gremlin Cave and got the Climbing set from there. Reason I did not venture back into the Pyramid is that I am "jumpy", and have no teleportation control. So all the traps could be dangerous - as I have no Trap Detection or Disarm Traps.

I like being jumpy. It can be a real pain in the butt when you are trying to get to a certain point, and it keeps teleporting you away, but the same thing has also saved my characters more times than I can count. Like being teleported away from a dangerous foe that would kill me in seconds. Also, it is a great way to discover hidden places (like Royal Vaults).

Of course, I am always on the look out for Blink Dogs, but I don't have a problem being tossed around the level like a ragdoll.

I have yet to be teleported into water, so I don't know if that is possible. But if it is possible to be teleported into water, then I should get teleportation control before I venture into the Tomb of the High Kings. Swimming doesn't really help there :D
In that case get teleport control before you do anything else - the ID is an ideal place for that. Teleportitis can lead to some very nasty results (among other things it can teleport you into a vault, right next to a monster you really don't want to be hit by).

You can't teleport on the bottom level of the Tomb of the High Kings, by the way. The only safe way of crossing the river is by creating an ice bridge. Make sure you drop enough items before you use it, though, or the chaos piranhas will rip you to pieces anyway.

Okies, I guess the hunt for Blink Dogs is truly on, then :D

Another question. How do I get Grand Mastery in a fighting style? And are there special bonuses for getting it?

A higher DV bonus and a better to hit and to damage value, but that's it, really. The only way of getting it is by using a particular way of fighting a lot, but I wouldn't try for grand mastery at all costs. Even if you find a great artifact weapon that can't be destroyed, there's still a chance you'll run into a vault full of ratling warlords and then things can get nasty if you only trained one weapon class.

Well, I'm a Beastmaster, so weapons? Who needs them?

I was just wondering what would happen when I recieve Grand Mastery in Unarmed Combat. Because as I am not really doing any damage to Steel Golems, I won't be a match for Molochs.

So I need something that gives me a lot of damage with my punches, and I was hoping that Grand Mastery gave me a huge increase. I guess Strength is my only solution, then...

Don't. Molochs have a corrupting attack and a very mean punch, and eventually they will hit you. That's why you should be training missiles, so you can take them down with well-aimed missiles of demon-slaying.

I've shot away every single arrow that I've found, but I never find enough to do some serious training.

Rocks are my most efficient missile weapon, as I never run out of those.

Does some frigging pre-x-mas ghul-boost exist? I've lost about fifteen characters today and yesterday, killed by ghuls. They always get me ambushed behind the corner, or appear behind me when I'm fighting against tension room, or something like that! :D

Not that I'm aware of, but characters created on Christmas Eve start out with a bonus (as do characters created on New Year's Eve, by the way).:)

@Tom: Just picking up all the arrows and quarrels you find in the dungeon isn't enough. When you meet monsters that shoot them (kobolds, ratling archers, barbarians, quicklings, dark elven archers), tease them for a bit. Keep running away from them and let them shoot lots of arrows at you. This works particularly well with wilderness encounters with barbarians: if you keep running away and avoid killing them (switch to coward just in case), you can easily get 100 arrows from one encounter. Arrow traps usually also yield about a dozen arrows each (two if you're lucky). If you aren't already in the habit of pickpocketing every monster that can be pickpocketed, you should start: extra arrows and quarrels aren't the nicest things you can get that way, but they aren't bad either. And of course buy all ammunition you find in shops, provided the prices aren't too high.
Most of the arrows and quarrels you'll get that way won't be great, but they'll be useful for gaining weapon marks. Save the slaying missiles you find for later and keep shooting all the rest over and over again until your last arrow is broken. Then switch to crossbows or slings. Slings aren't that great, but you might want to train them anyway, in case you find sling bullets of demon slaying later on.

Well, there's another problem. Being permanently invisible, no-one shoots arrows after me. I haven't checked shops, though. And I haven't really thought about traps to give me ammo. (Apart from the one or two arrow they shoot at me when I first walk over the trap). I'll look into those options right away.

I'm sorry for whining but it's depressing to hear about places I've luckily survived to see once and things I can't even imagine. Damn I hate this game... :D

So, to make this reply's existence justifiable, are you going to finish that guide of yours, AJ?

I'm going to, yes. But I don't have time to work on it at the moment, I'm afraid.:D
@Tom: Have you tried alerting them to your presence through pickpocketing them until they notice or through using a holy symbol?

Don't have pickpocketing :D
However, I have purchased a Ring of Teleport Control.

The only Chaotic thing I do, is that I eat Wights from time to time. I go to the Dwarven graveyard and kill enough Wights to get a single body. Then I leave the place and do something Lawful to get back on N=.

I'm trying to get Crowned. I have no hope of becoming Pre-Crowned, but I am hoping to be Crowned :)

You seriously don't need to be *that* fussy about your alignment. Pickpocketing isn't dangerous for your alignment at all, provided you get that amulet of order from Tywat Pate. As soon as you get to N- or NC through pickpocketing, just wear the blessed amulet of order until you're back at N= or N+ (and stop pickpocketing for a while). You can repeat this as often as you like. That's the beauty of playing neutral characters in ADOM: they get the best of both sides, really.:D
And you definitely shouldn't be missing out on pickpocketing. It's one of the most useful skills in the entire game. If you're wearing a blessed amulet of balance while pickpocketing, the effect on your alignment is even slighter than usual.

Oh, and about arrow traps: you know you can deliberately trigger them by standing on them and pressing Ctrl + t, right?

I feel I've done something stupid. Please tell me the muteness you acquire after eating a harpy's corpse is not permanent. If it is, I will sadly force my wizard into early retirement.
