Holy mother of crap! :D

I just started a new game, playing a random character. I was handed a N= Human Beastfighter.

And, here's the insane bit:
First mission, Puppy Cave. 2nd Level yielded a Neutral Altar. 3rd Level yielded a Milky White Pool and granted me a wish (I wished for moloch armor). I was at the time a 3rd Level Beastmaster running around in eternium plate mail). 4th Level yielded another pool - and *drumroll* another wish!!!

I am now an 8th Level Beastmaster, and I have yet to get down to the basement and pick up the puppy! I love this character :P

Wonder if I can get crowned before saving the puppy, that would rock :D

Edit:
Oh well, I blew that wish.
I decided to wish for an Eternium Tower Shield, thinking that "Hey, as long as I am unarmed, right?" Wrong. Well, I can't really complain, although I do have a completely useless shield now - but I guess I can equip it if I have to run away from something in Coward mode.

Oh, and now I am permanently invisible. Yay! No cats can see me! :P Boo! No tournament! :)

Yo!

You left that poor puppy all alone in a dark scary cave?  Tom, how COULD you?  :D
The poor wee thing is still suffering in there.  How can you sleep at night, knowing you left an innocent wee puppy to suffer?   :)

I hadn't left him. I was still on my way down. Of course, the stupid mutt drowned himself once I got down... :)

I've just lost my best character yet, a gnomish wizard. He died on level 10 of the Caverns of Chaos, because of a doppleganger lord: horrible, horrible monster. Once he is adjacent to you, your life is literally over; I don't even want to imagine what an insanely high attack bonus he must have had to get past 40 DV and 8 PV.

If anyone is interested, I've attached the memorial file to my post. You can always scold me for my silly beginner's mistakes! And yes, I know my speed is ridiculously low; quite unavoidable for a wizard, I think, who is physically weak and must carry heavy spellbooks around.

Well, I think you could've had better PV (although I think your DV was good - I guesstimate it would've been around 25-30 on normal tactics), and that would've helped. You also could've tried spellcasting, since you *were* a wizard. You should probably also read all the spellbooks you find instead of just lugging them around, as you should only utilize book casting when you know what you're doing. There's also the added bonus of training your learning (and willpower?) and decreasing the amount of weight you have to carry.

Well, I found him at the bottom of a river. Quite dead. So I just assumed that he drowned himself, but I guess that he could've been fighting a rat, or something else that ignores water.

But isn't spellcasting of little use when you're confused? Don't you end up casting spells on the wrong person, similarly to striking haphazardly when fighting confused?

I do read all the spellbooks I can find. But I also know that, once a spell has been used too many times, it is erased from memory and you must learn it again. This is why I keep the spellbooks of my most frequently used spells. Maybe, I should hope instead to find new spellbooks as I progress?

Wizards always find loads of spellbooks, more than any other class. If all else fails, you can always visit the library later in the game: for wizards it holds at least one copy of every spellbook there is (other classes will have some scrolls mixed in).

Yes, I believe so, but you don't get confused *that* often, and if you have a ring of the clear mind or a helm/ring of mental stabiltity, and I even think high willpower, then you'll have a much less chance of getting confused. You really only get confused by dopplegangers (who are easy enough to kill from a distance with spells and/or Burning Hands/Baptism of Fire) and lichs (which you probably won't see until the CoC graveyard). In any case, carrying books around isn't going to keep you from getting confused. Anyway, if you're so worried about being confused and not being able to cast spells, then just be a melee character and smash stuff. :)

AJ answered this quite well, although I will add that you *might* need backups when you get later in the game in emergency situations, but it's doubtful.

Can anyone give any tips for playing wizard/other spellcasters. I can't play them even if my life dependended on it. I mean, the first thing that strikes me odd is that you only have a limited amount of that spell. And in deep dungeons I tend to run out of mana and get killed...

Tip to people not wanting to kill felines. Kicking a boobytrapped explosive door = feline kill. :)

My invisibility had prevented me from killing any cats, and I was kicking down a door, and a cat was killed on the other side of the door. Now my invisibility has become a curse. I can't compete in the arena - and I can't get the ring of the Cat King.

Anyways, Potatoe, when playing spellcasters, don't use up your spells on lower monsters in the beginning. Try shooting them off with arrows or throw rocks at them. You'll need your spells for tension rooms. Once you've cleared out a couple of tension rooms, you should be high enough level that you are able to keep your magic for longer (as well as being more familliar with certain spells).
