Yes, Beef's strategy worked. Thanks for all your help. So perception has its use after all, eh? On a side note, the door was trapped and the trap ripped my precious club apart. God, I hate it when it happens! Is there a way to detect a trapped door and disarm it?

There is, but you need a skill for both of those, and more often than not when you're first training Disarm Traps, you'll set off the trap, so it's really only useful for disarming water traps, spear traps, and the like. As for Detect Traps, when it's really low, you can search the area _many_ times, and never find anything, so never trust your first (or even second) search.

You can throw a heavy rock at the door. That'll smash the door and set off the trap. Or you can cast 'knock' at it. Or you can zap a wand of knocking at the door if you have one. Or you can just spend some time in the ID collecting keys of all types - that's by far the easiest solution, actually.:)

You can also throw an anvil at the door.

Or if you have a pick axe, or are a mid-level monk, or have a wand of digging, you can make your own doors :)

Just beware of Rock Monsters :D

I thought pick-axe immediately. If I can't find my way forward, I'll make one!

Or be a level 13+ monk, so you can kick your way through rock. Very cool.:)

That's a lot of suggestions there. You sure can't blame the game for being simplistic, can you! Since my current character has neither a pickaxe, nor a wand of knock, nor a substitute, I simply remove everything he is wearing before kicking down the door to avoid losing any precious items; only cursed items remain and if they are destroyed, then good riddance.

Monks sound quite interesting: being able to break rock is impressive. I'll give one a try next time I begin a game.

Additionally, aren't trolls a bit too powerful? My trollish barbarian is nearly unstoppable. I've reached level 8 of the Caverns of Chaos, and only ogre magi and shadow lords cause me to retreat.

There's the point, they bow before magic and there are a lot of monsters that can cast spells...

That's what you think :)

Trust me, I'm a troll fanatic, and I always end up loosing my trolls because I get too careless - believing that they are unstoppable. In fact, due to the trolls really slow levelling, they are actually difficult to play far into the game (as they tend to accumulate a lot of corruption, while still being too weak to venture very far down into the CoC.)

Yeah, cause you spend years to level, and the highest I've ever gotten is a level 25-ish Troll :D

Just walking around corrupts you, you know :)

I won with a level 32, and D:50 was a lot harder than I expected. Then again, if I was level 50, I think I could easily have meleed Fistanariaus. But they DO take forever to level up, making you want to just get on with the game instead of hacking all day.

I've just lost my best character yet, a gnomish wizard. He died on level 10 of the Caverns of Chaos, because of a doppleganger lord: horrible, horrible monster. Once he is adjacent to you, your life is literally over; I don't even want to imagine what an insanely high attack bonus he must have had to get past 40 DV and 8 PV.

If anyone is interested, I've attached the memorial file to my post. You can always scold me for my silly beginner's mistakes! And yes, I know my speed is ridiculously low; quite unavoidable for a wizard, I think, who is physically weak and must carry heavy spellbooks around.
