It doesn't really matter how much guides, walkthroughs and hints you read about ADOM. In the end, it all falls on your shoulders :bleh:

But as for dying all the time, yeah that happens a lot with new characters. My first 30 or so characters all died before reaching level 6. As you get more experience, you'll learn ways to keep your character alive for longer. Especially the two top life-saving tactics:
1. Running away in defensive mode
2. Praying, if running doesn't work
:P

This game gets addictive really really fast. Before you know it, it'll be four in the morning before you're through. But speaking of guides... AJ? I believe you have something to say. :bleh:

She has more than something, or at least had. Wasn't she writing her own guidebook? But googling "adom guidebook" should provide you link with the classic GB, however it has waaaay much more info than beginner can handle. But after some time, you'll get the hang of it, hopefully! I have to admit that I have it, but have never found it very useful. Reading this thread (all the 110 pages :bleh: ) can also give you lots of useful information! :P

Well, I've got an awful lot of Renaissance literature to get through over the rest of the so-called "long vacation" and I'll be in my final year after that, so I don't have too much time to work on it at the moment, I'm afraid. And I gave my laptop to a friend for a sort of health-checkup and I haven't been able to collect it yet (he recommended getting a new one - after six years. I'm heartbroken.;) ) But I'm up to about nine pages now. You can read them if you like, but it's still work in progress.:bleh:
Keep in mind, though, what I'm writing is meant to be a playing/strategy guide, not a rival to the guidebook. Just something that'll help you get the hang of the game. The official guidebook is great, but it isn't necessarily going to help you when you're just starting out and keep dying for the same reasons, and it's certainly not going to make you win.:P

@Japofran: Read all the spoilers you need, but I wouldn't recommend savescumming. Not so much for ethical reasons, but you just play different when you think "Oh well, I can always restore". The whole point about roguelikes is that you don't have that option, so you have to adapt your playing style accordingly.

Yeah, and you learn it a lot faster, when you have to learn to survive... :bleh:

I reached as far as level 12 with a high elven archer, but after going all the way in and out of the Unremarkable Dungeon a swamp hydra appeared in the wilderness. I should have fled, but you don't know how tough a given monster is until it kills you for the first time.

Next time that happens, just switch to berserk settings (F1) and fire missiles at it. Swamp hydras are tough for beginners, but a level 12 archer will probably be able to kill them with a single shot.

Very nice character. Congratulations! :(

About the "saving himself" bit: it just means how often you saved. I usually save a lot more often, but then again, my wins took me far longer to achieve...

As I've been saying before, the key to killing the ancient chaos wyrm is poison, because poisoning helps against its skill to heal its own wounds. It's also cumulative, so if you manage to hit the wyrm with poison a few times, it'll be considerably weakened by it. That's why wands of poison are extremely useful in the ToEF, but if you haven't found any of those by then, dipping your missiles in poison will also help a great deal.

I don't like ADoM, I like ZangbandTK more, but that I think is because ZangbandTK is more accesible.. I think I'll give ADoM another shot sometime...

Thanks a whole bunch, everyone!

@AJ: Yeah, I had a wand of poison at that point, but forgot to use it..  :/

Welp, time to try for an ultra ending now...

Is it really? I found it much easier to get the hang of ADOM. It's nowhere near as confusing as ZangbandTK.

Whichever one you try first will always be more accessible; learning the controls for the second one is going to be tougher when you're used to the first's :(

Actually I find ZangbandTK's controls better, but still prefer ADOM. Though admitted I haven't played either one for long time... Perhaps now's the time? *goes looking for some new combo*
