If you want something that's complete, try the ADOM guide book. For my guide, I plan to concentrate more on tactics and playing than on spoilers, but reading the guide book never hurt anybody. Having read it won't make winning the game much easier...

That's good, Appearance isn't really a very good stat (not very useful), where Learning (I guess that's what you meant of "intellect") is very useful. That sonuds like a potion of exchange that you drank, and you were very lucky; usually the stat changes are bad (eg, having a troll barbarian's Strength and Charisma swapped).
It is usually a good idea to avoid drinking unidentified potions because of that danger, just hang onto them until you find out what they are.

I ended up taking all my clothes/equipment off on the level above dwarftown because I wanted to learn Farsight, and, as a fighter, you don't get good success rates learning books and it usually explodes into a ball of fire, destroying a bunch of valuable equipment (although I did manage to get two good reads out of a Strength of Atlas book I found earlier). I had one good read in and was shooting for two when I was teleported across the level, naked, with nothing in my inventory. To make matters worse, I had just gotten to L status to generate a lawful altar in Dwarftown and was on bad terms with The One Who Sees, so One didn't answer my prayers and I ran into a wolf tension room... I'll let you see the rest...
I just can't believe how stupid that death was.

Farsight is a difficult spell, though, so it's surprising the character managed to learn it at all. Next time, just stash the book somewhere and teach yourself spells by zapping wands of wonder in a safe place. Then, if you've still got the spellbook, you'll be able to bookcast spells like Strength of Atlas - it's less useful for combat spells, of course, because bookcasting doesn't increase spell efficiency.

On a side note, this game seemed to feature an unusually high number of mimics for reasons unknown to me.

I once lost a character by killing a gorgon and then being stupid enough to eat the corpse before checking whether I had petrification resistance. Turned out that I hadn't...
