I think the most useful classes for this kind of challenge are beastfighters, monks, healers, elementalists, paladins, rangers, and perhaps even wizards. (All born with healing, and a few with Literacy). If you get lucky though, sometimes you start with Literacy if your intelligence is high enough - I think it has to be at least 9 (although beastfighters and barbarians never start with it).
Sometimes they do...:(

All grey elves are literate, regardless of class

I have a lot of work, but I'll try to take part with at least char...

Edit: Ok, now I can start trying, my dear Buffy died... *snif*

Err, Juni, the challenge was meant to be in the Infinite Dungeon, not the puppy cave...

Yep, I know. It was my old char, that I wanted to finish before taking the challenge. Luckily she died early. :(

Argh. My trollish monk died of poison, and I even forgot to pray... I didn't think it was worth a char dump, as he only made it to I:6-ish... I have one more char to go...

I'm still in the game, by the way. Just a little preoccupied to play :(

I'm currently at I9 or I10, I think, with my second attempt.

Third and final attempt.  A golem who has been chasing me since l12 got me trapped between it and a beserker prince on l15, I didn't really stand a chance.

The grey elven barbarian is a very poweful combination though, I think I'll try playing normally with one sometime.

What a shame. You were so close... Did the arrows of thunder work on the golem? If they did, then I think you could have stunned it and quickly executed it on beserk tactics. Speaking of beserk, why were you on it? Did you just want to end it quickly?

I was on coward until I reached that corridor, when I saw that I was trapped, I figured that I needed to get out of that situation ASAP, so I went on beserk and attacked the beserker prince, as that would have got me further into unexplored territory (I was looking for the down staircase, as it happens, I had already gone past it).

And as for the golem, I has tried fighting it when I first met it, I couldn't do any sort of real damage to it (as it was so tough), running and seeing how far I could get was my best option, I thought.

My second attempt:

I got careless and wanted to explore a little after finding the downstairs.... not a good thing, as I had lost my girdle of Strength, and had lost some strength in an encounter with undeads.

I still managed to get to the entry of the corridor, beating my way through a horde of Silver Wolves and Dire Wolves, and one Werewolf, an invisible Ogre Magus, a Lighting Lizard, and more evil stuff like that. But when that Eye of Destruction popped up inside the corridor, and the Berserker Emperor moved up behind me, all was lost, really - especially as I only had 25-something life left when I reached the corridor.

Forgot to pray for divine intervention, though.... D'oh!

This game is confuzzling, really confuzzling, and what the ****? Some of the commands in this game are kind of dumb... I'm gonna start playing this again. Great fun.

You don't actually need all the commands.:(

Ok, I just starved. How do you actually eat stuff from the inventory? Do you have to enter the "wilderness" or something?

Try the "e" key (that's one of the commands that makes sense and is reasonably easy to remember).
