Ahem...
Anyways, I tried to see how long I could manage to keep an Orchish Barbarian alive by going directly to the Small Cave and never leave.

I managed to stay alive until I reached level 8, at which point I was killed by a Flesh Golem.

I'm actually rather pleased with that result, as I discovered that you can't really change equipment in the cave (in fear of getting a cursed item), and you can't create holy water (as there are no altars). So you basically have to do with what you have - which in my case was hardened leather and an Orchish Spear.

Still. I managed to survive both poison and mighty blows from Barbarian Kings. I'm pleased

Unfortunately, I was too quick to press N to create a dumpfile

Ah, we'll see yet who wins! I'm still not out! My trollish assasin's doing quite well, and I'm trying to decide if I should go through the tedious effort of precrowning... Other than that, I know I'm definitely not going to finish inside the time limit, seeing as how it's day 25ish...

I too wish to enter this contest.

The random thingy just spat out Danny, the Male Dwarven Ranger.

Sounds quite an interesting combination and he started off with lots of skills (they go to more than one page).

I'm in the Small Cave now (as he started quite strong), I've picked up a hand axe so I'm dual wielding it with a battle axe.

Hopefully, this game will teach me to be more cautious (as I've only got him in this competition).

altars can be generated in the small cave though. had it on my last game. pretty nifty

Wow, I nearly died on two separate occasions, both involving displacer beasts.  Any advice on how to deal with them, the only technique I've been able to come up with so far is to go on to beserk tactics (to maximise my to-hit), and hope to get a couple of good hits in and kill them beofre they kill me.

EDIT:  Gah, dead.  I ran into a dark elven wizard and was surrounded by spiders in the UD before I had a chance to develop any poison resistance.  Still, I thikn it was msotly bad luck that I didn't do well with this character.  I think the Dwarven Ranger combo has real potential.

Missiles fired from a distance with berserker tactics. But that's about it, really.

Nah, I died very quickly (I only got around 1,000 points).  I hadn't really done anything that needed advice.  I was just cornered in a corridor by lots of spiders and I had nowhere to run.

What with all the effort fo uploading (finding a site etc) it's not worth it.

Actually if you change the character file dump to a .txt format you can just upload it here then, no effort whatsoever.

Are you telling me that berserker tactics improve your effectiveness with missile weapons too?  That doesn't seem right!

Well, you 'T'hrow them in the game. So the more aggresively you throw your arrows, the more they will penetrate the target. Seems perfectly logical to me

Well, actually you might say that it does give you a bit of an unfair advantage, because you get the advantages of berserk tactics (increased chance to hit) but not the disadvantages, because the lower DV won't affect you if the monster isn't standing next to you and can't actually hit you. But obviously the monster will be moving towards you, so you'll only be able to get a few shots in this way. Still, it can be quite useful for weakening monsters.
